I've posted on the other sticky, but I guess there's no harm in putting it here too to get the ball rolling.
My GP here in Manchester is great - Dr C Bowley at the Ashville Surgery in Whalley Range/Trafford. I'd definatly recommend her if you have an awkward GP who wont take you seriously (and if you live in the area, obviously)

Mine is Dr Kommu. Took me very seriously when I went to him to say I'd been ttc for only 4 months and as I already have a child I thought he'd tell me to bog off and come back later but as I already knew that I have pcos he took me very seriously and said he'd sort it while its early days. the bloke is a star!! Got Gynae appointment in Jan-09

I'd really like to recommend my endocrinologist at Royal Hampshire County hospital in Winchester: Dr Chong. He's approachable and understanding and has put me on Flutamide for my acne and hairiness. I think it's still a new treatment for PCOS and it works so I'm over the moon.
But I heartily don't recommend the endocrinologists at Royal South Hants in Southampton. They might have changed of course but I was treated atrociously there at many appointments.

Hi guys have any of you on the NHS been refused treatment for being overweight? I have been wanting to try clomid for a year and a half but been refused until my BMI is in the normal range.
My dr (Dr Hamilton at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary) is brilliant but he said to me that my BMI would have to be below 35 before I could get any fertility drugs. I think it's an HFEA recommendation not just him. He says overweight women have more problems during pregnancy and have more risk of miscarriage so it's given me the kick up the bum I need to lose weight

Hi I am in the Essex area (Romford) but id be willing to travel to London, does anyone have any suggestions of good Drs, we already have a child but want another because of this NHS treatment is out.
If you have the money for private treatment or insurance cover, then don't waste your time on the NHS. My hubby and I have wasted a precious year for the NHS to do initial hormone tests under my GP first, then another 3 months to be referred to an assisted conception unit, then a further few months to get a first appt, then the ultrasound scan, and now we are told we have a further wait until Dec or Jan to start IVF. I've HAD it with the NHS, they suck!!! We are now exploring the private clinics in London especially after we found out the NHS live birth rates for IVF is around 20-25% compared with double that at private clinics. If you don't have the money you can consider an egg sharing programme but the donors can be identified by the children at the age of 18 which is why I've chosen not to do it.
Hello,
I live in London and am looking for help. I was dx'ed with POCS about 13 years ago but I was just put on BC. Now I am engaged and we're thinking about TTC in a few years.
I asked my GP if I should be going anything now, but she told me I have to wait until I am having trouble ttc.
I would rather have a blood test and know what I am working with and if we should try for a baby sooner.
I have private insurance with axia.
Hi guys pretty new to this site, posted on a forum without realising there was it was wordwide and just discovered the uk/ireland members.
Have had by the sounds of things a pretty similar emotional journey as the rest of you, my gp is crap! I live in Scotland.
I have discovered accupuncture has saved me from insanity and have found an amazing therapist. I have been going for 3 months and although i havent ovulated i find i am much more chilled and able to deal with this condition. Although i havent yet ovulated (according to fertility monitor) i have had 2 periods at day 42 and 46, prior to this i had gone for 5 months with no period at all.
I have had 2 months of clomid which did absolutely nowt prior to starting accupuncture and was very emotional.
Have just started metformin and to recommence clomid when established on met, will def keep up accunpunture so fingers crossed i ovulate.
Hi guys have any of you on the NHS been refused treatment for being overweight? I have been wanting to try clomid for a year and a half but been refused until my BMI is in the normal range.
Hi Sanielle, I am overweight too (BMI > 40!) and been ttc for 22 months now, and probably not ovulating, and very low progesterone levels.
I was registered at a practice in Oldham where I tried most of the doctors for different issues and then started seeing doctor x for ttc last year. He was sort of ok and did not mention my weight, but I would see him 2-3 mins and already be kicked out as he had too many appointments. I was referred for an ultrasound that confirmed my polycystic ovaries, but the hospital I went to treated me really badly (in Rochdale) and then when he saw the results he hardly explained to me anything or wanted to give me copies of my blood results.
So I had enough and went on the NHS website and looked at all the other GP practices around where I live and analysed all the doctors they have, and looked at their specialisations (and also looked at the patient feedback stats). So in the end changed practice and moved to one in Royton (still Oldham) were they have two female GPs with obgyn specialties.
I am fairly happy now. I went and made it clear from the start I had PCOS, and that I knew I was overweight and had been struggling trying to loose weight all my life (I also already have a gastric band which has made things much worse for me). I brought all evidence of my PCOS and insulin resistance to the appointment and got Metformin finally prescribed. She mentioned my weight and said it could be a bit of a problem but that as I had been trying for over a year and am over 30, that I have a right to see a "consultant" at the hospital (not sure if he is a RE or OBGYN). Anyway, I saw him last week (Royal Oldham Hospital) and got Provera for now (though not needed luckily this month) and end of January I am seeing him again and I will get Clomid and hopefully Prometrium.
He said I could only have 3 months of Clomid because of my weight, and then maybe 3 months of injectables.
I am happy with that for now, hoping it will be enough, and was quite happy with my appointment. In the meantime I am doing my upmost to loose more weight with the help of Metformin. I think my consultant seemed to be the kind of person that if I manage to loose weight, he might give me some more months on the Clomid. I hope so anyway.
Sorry for long reply... so although it might depend from where you are in the UK, I think that so far they are not allowed to not help you try to conceive because you are overweight. I think I read somewhere though that you cannot get IVF being overweight, but I hope I won't need it.
Good luck to everyone
