Am still relatively new to this PCOS thing and was wondering if anyone knows of any definite genetic links for PCOS? I have five sisters and of the three of them that have been tested for PCOS, two of them have it. Another sister thinks she might have it due to the usual symptoms, excess hair, irregular periods etc.
My mam had ten kids, so don't think she had any problems! What do you guys think?
I think it is genetical. A lot of women on my dad's side of the family have excess hair in some places, thinning hair and some even balding on top and many have taken 5-10 years TTC. No one on my mom's side has been diagnosed with it, but my dad's side of the family has it quite a bit. My doctor says I only have a "mild" case. So I guess the two kinda evened out.

I'll go to my grave believing depo caused mine, but that's just me. Synthetic progestins have been known to worsen IR; method & dose of depo probably made it a permanent thing in my case. *sigh* I have no family history of these problems or infertility.

Me and my sister have it. Therefore I believe it is! My doctor told me it can run in families. My mother had no problem with having kids or periods or anything either, and she was dumbfounded that we have this problem. Just recently I got a call from my 1st cousin on my mom's side and she said that she had just been diagnosed with it too. It HAS to be hereditary or SOMETHING!
My mother doesn't, but my grandmother and her sister both do. My grandmother never had the excess hair or thinning hair but her sister has facial hair, but lucky for her it's blonde so you really can't see it. My grandmother has gotten rid of all of her cysts but the horomone part I believe is permanant, but of course she dosen't care anymore. Both of them never had problems conceiving. My grandmother had 2 kids and her sister which has it a lot worse then her, but not as bad as I do, she had 6 kids.
So it is possible, also her only daughter doesn't have it...so I don't think it's directly genetic, but one of those things that can skip around in generations etc.

I believe it is as well. Sorry I am not of much help. As soon as I find something, I'll let you know.

Well... My aunt and mother (the only women on that side) both had problems... my aunt had agonising periods and irregular cycles much like me... and both had problems concieving and carrying to term. Late onset diabetes runs on that side through their father and his brothers... they have one sister but we don't know about her... supposedly late onset diabetes could be the result of the pancreas overworking and then failing.. which is something that apparently happens with PCOS sufferers... *shrug* I believe it is to some degree genetic. and I can only hope that things will be better for my children... at least knowing I have it will make diagnosing them easier.. right?

As far as I have found out it can be genetic, but I am the only one in my family who has it. My mum was always regular with AF, never had any other symptoms, and you only had to look at my aunts and they'd get pregnant! However I never knew my grandmother on my fathers side so maybe it came from there.
Best wishes
Dannie.

I am the ONLY one in my family on my Mom's side or my Dad's side to ever exibit symptoms of PCOS! I have checked into it to be sure!
I wouldn't rule out that, for some, it is probably genetic but in my case there seems to be ZERO evidence that it is!!
