I have hirsutism pretty bad on the rest of my body, and know the risks of acne and male pattern baldness, but the funny thing is, as my PCOS has gotten worse, my (scalp)hair has grown faster. Anyone else experience this? Does this make sense? I think it ROCKS, esp. since I've gained 50 lbs. in 2 years, and have way too much hair on other parts of my body.
My hair started growing like a weed when my PCOS went nutso thanks to the high-androgen BCP I was put on in 2000. I surely didn't complain, as I always wanted longer hair, but it was almost frightening.
In the winter of 2000 my hair was just grazing my bra-strap. It was growing (yes, I ended up measuring this) three and one quarter inches a month! Average is one half inch for most folks. I ended up giving up on keeping it dyed, as the roots were a losing battle, threw it up in a bun, and in a few months I had butt length hair. And this was with monthly trims to take off old damage! I was taking MSM at the time and blamed that, but now you have me thinking. My natural hair color darkened at that time too, which I found odd.
Now that I'm getting things back under control with the PCOS, my hair growth has slowed a bit. Saw Palmetto has helped, but I'm averaging about an inch a month instead of 3+. My natural haircolor (what little I've seen of it anyway!) has lightened back up, too.
You may be on to something Cheech.

Wow! My hair definitely hasn't grown that fast. I've been trying to grow it long again for a few years and was growing rather slowly, then over the summer it grew about 2 - 2.5 incehes. I know that hair grows faster over the summer, but it hadn't been for a few years, so I'm so excited that my hair is a few inches past my shoulders :o)
I have a really high DHEA level. I wonder if that is a contributing factor?
Well, I am a kind of genetic freak in the hair and nails department, so my hair grows pretty fast normally. I mean, I had a great aunt that had hair that reached the ground when it wasn't braided Two and a half inches in a summer sounds pretty darn good to me!
My hormones weren't being tested when all this hair madness was going on, sadly, or we could compare DHEA levels and see if that has anything to do with it. I do know that I also put on about 50 lbs that year as well.
If you are interested in growing your hair out I'd recommend looking into the various boards/sites out there on the internet devoted to long hair. They are full of great info!
