I have been prescribed Glucophage and am wondering if it helps with weight loss. My doc thinks I have I.R. even though my blood work comes back fine. I have to agree with her, because I have a lot of weight in my stomach and have gone from 115 to 135 in one year. I work out 5-6 days a week, high intensity cardio and weight training. My fat doesn't budge! My diet is great as well... I also don't ovulate.
Hi, I went off birth control in February and very soon after that I started to get the symptoms of PCOS (absent periods, acne, very sudden weight gain). I had gone from 140 to 158 in 5 months! I was just diagnosed with PCOS and my OBGYN put me on Metformin. She started me out taking 1 pill daily for 2 weeks, then taking 2 pills daily for 2 more weeks and now I'm on 3 pills daily. I've been taking 3 pills for about 2 weeks now and I've lost 10 lbs! I still have more to go, but it's a start! I do work out 3-4 times a week and I stopped drinking coffee and I barely drink alcohol because you're not supposed to drink while taking Met. I think a combination of those things have helped me loose weight. My husband and I are trying to conceive and so far I still haven't gotten my period while on Met. I've noticed a lot of positive changes with my body since starting it though. Now I just have to hope it helps me ovulate and get on a regular cycle! I hope this helps. Good luck!

TTC since July 2009 Metformin 1500mg since September 2009
Thanks for your reply and Good luck to you and your hubbie!
I used a plan B last year and ever since then my body has been screwed up. I stopped getting a period and I was constantly have a irritating discharge, then came the weight gain. Nothing ever shows up on tests, not even cysts on my ovaries. But my doc came to the conclusion that I am I.R. and that I have PCOS. I pray to the God above that this works for me! I was put on b.c. to "fix" the problem for 6 months. But I don't want to not ovulate, I want my body to do what it is supposed to do, even though I am not trying to conceive.
Please keep me posted on the baby action and again good luck to you!
A lot of women do have luck losing weight with Metformin but it isn't 100% guaranteed.
I've never had luck with diets and until this last year exercise was sporadic at best because of other medical conditions that caused me pain. I also don't have the option to take Met because I'm allergic. I tried all sorts of diets and eventually I was feeling so bad I wasn't really hungry so I was eating only about 800 calories a day and still I had no change. Anyway, in October of 08 I started a low-carb diet (I should mention I have Celiac disease so I can't eat bread/pasta/cookies etc anyway) and that had a small affect. In March I was diagnosed with endometrial cancer caused by my PCOS which was a major wakeup for me. I saw a Nutritionist and Fitness Instructor which was minimally helpful. Finally I did a ton of research on how PCOS works and how our metabolism and energy production works etc. What finally worked for me is eating 1750 calories a day in small meals every 2.5 hours. I have 350 cals for breakfast, a 200 cal snack, 350 cals for lunch, 200 cal snack, 200 cal snack, 350 cals for dinner and then sometime if I'm really hungry at night I'll have 100 cal snack. I do workout but not all at once. I dance for 3-5 minutes in the morning, ride my exercise bike for 5 minutes at lunch and then dance again for 3-5 minutes before dinner. I also try to get in a bit of exercise randomly throughout the day (like hand weights, stomach crunches, leg lifts etc while watching TV or playing Wii Sports after dinner). To help curb the sugar cravings I take cinnamon caplets twice a day. A couple things I should point out. I'm on Megace for the cancer which is notorious for making people gain weight because it makes you really hungry. With my diet plan I'm almost never hungry and I've lost 54 pounds in one year. The other thing that I think has made a big difference is that I eat almost no sugar and when I do it's in small doses and is always a natural sugar such as pure cane sugar, fruit sugars, honey or best of all Agave Nectar. Sugar is the PCOSers enemy.
I hope you find a plan that works for you. Good luck with your weight loss

I lost 60 lbs while taking metformin and eating right. I am working out of course as well, but not even that much. Before I started taking met I couldn't lost weight and I had gained almost 100 lbs. When I started taking met I was about 280 and now about 225 ( I have gained about 5 back this month)...I'm not extremely insulin resistant because my tests generally come back good as well, as long as I am eating well, but met sure has helped me.
