Well about 9 months gluten free, around 70 pounds lighter and very little acne, migraines, and feel on top of the world. About 1 month and 2 weeks ago I got off my pills (Yasmin and Metoformin) and AF came for a visit. I had a few more PMS symptoms than when I was on the pill but overall not taking the meds feels great and my head is itching less and skin is getting better. I also follow the glycemic index diet so few carbs and a lot of vegetables and legumes daily and a couple lean meats per week. My diet is probably 70/30 vegetables to meat.
I was wondering if low iron and vitamin d may be a sign of celiac?? I had a blood test done for celiac but I also had to fast to get my LDL levels checked at the same time. Would this have attributed to false results??
I think I do have a malabsorption problem because of low iron (I am not a vegetarian) and was already taking 1000UI's a day of vitamin D3 (dairy makes me gassy) for 6+ months and my results still came up as low. I have been told to take 2000UI's a day to get my levels up.
I have never been diagnosed for PCOS (though I have quite a few symptoms except my periods are very regular) but I have finally been referred to an endocrinologist for my problems.
Any ideas?? Should I ask for another blood test where I don't have to fast??
Where do you find all these gluten free foods? I don't know of any health food stores near me and we don't have a Whole Foods or Trader Joe's or anything like that. And it's expensive too isn't it? I want to try it, but I'm not sure where to start. I'm eating lots of salads with fresh veggies, but I'm not sure about my salad dressings or anything like that.
most sald dressings are ok, just check the labels. Food now have to list wheat in bold at the bottom of a product if it's hidden in the ingredients or not.
We eat a ton of lean meat, with brown rice, and veggies. We've gotten quite good with spices, butter, garlic, etc.!

Sometimes they don't list the wheat allergy at the bottom, it is always best to read ingredients and also sometimes they'll put a line saying if the item was made in a facility with wheat (even some gluten free products are but if this label is at the bottom I don't buy it), if so it is off the list regardless of its ingredients if you have serious reactions to wheat, this really depends on your sensitivity level. But I avoid it at all costs, my body rejects it strongly.
I am a little skeptical of the current gluten = satan mentality. Suddenly everyone is gluten intolerant and all of these problems we are having are being blamed on gluten. I hear so many people say "I gave up gluten and I lost so much weight, I must have a problem with gluten!" but truthfully "giving up gluten" actually means cutting out a lot of processed crap (in favor of healthier stuff) in addition to reducing the sheer volume of food you can eat (since gluten free counterparts are often pricey as hell - you're way less likely to binge on boxes of cookies that cost $7 a pop than you are on bags of chips ahoy which cost $2 or $3 - not to mention there are fewer cookies in those pricier boxes)
I don't deny that gluten sensitivity exists, or that some people have problems with gluten, just as some people have problems with any food - but I don't think giving up gluten is a magical cure-all for all the things it is touted to be causing.
Just my opinion... but I'm skeptical.
I've noticed corn and rice Chex now puts right on the box "Now gluten free!" which makes me picture flashbacks to the whole no-fat mentality - "oh, it's ___ free, I can eat the whole box!"

It certainly changed my life. Before going gluten free I had a migraine or brain fog everyday, I was in severe pain or discomfort daily and couldn't think straight. I had gained 100 pounds in a year, and I generally felt awful and fatigued. First I went on the glycemic load diet for about 6 months. This cut out all processed foods and carbs and helped me loose some weight. But I was still not gluten free, wheat is in soysauce and other things I was still eating, like more complex carbs like bran, so I was still not feeling great.
When I finally made the link between wheat as a possible cause for my migraine, acne and inability to feel good, even though I was loosing weight, I went gluten free. One week after going gluten free my life improved, 8 months later I feel like a new person. Eating wheat instantly makes me feel awful again, it is the only thing that causes it. I can still have things like Doritos and potato chips and some other processed foods that are wheat free. But they do not make me feel bad. Soooooo maybe that will fill you in from a personal experience. I was skeptical too but after doing it I am off my meds, having AF, not in pain, and getting back the life I had before my health went down hill.
Why gluten suddenly attacked my body this way by bringing on daily migraines and about a year later a 100 pound weight gain I don't know. But getting off of it has been a revelation. 10 years of my life were horrible, a nightmare, and now I feel like the active, healthy, happy individual I was before the wheat.
I've started a blog that will record my use of the Insulite system and other supplements and diet. I have gone of prescription medication and am trying to treat my PCOS naturally http://nomorezombie.blogspot.com/
cjshanks ~ Thanks for sharing your blog! I feel so much better off gluten as well. I have a documented gluten allergy. Still learning how to cook with no gluten, but getting better at it!

Lays chips are gluten free. I have seen people with gluten allergies that are still obese
You can definitely eat a lot of crap that is gluten free. But a lot of people who have made the switch to gluten free and then sing the praises of eliminating gluten have also made substantial changes in other areas of their diet which, IMO, are just as likely to be the reason behind their increased well being.
