Default PCOS and M/C after 16 weeks or birth under 30 weeks

Does anyone know if PCOS has been linked to pregnancy loss after 16 weeks and/or live birth under 30 weeks?

I have to say I am shocked at how many women on this site have lost babies in the late second trimester and how many have given birth when they were under 30 weeks pg.

I know the reasons are always PTL or IC but it seems like we have them way too often here.

If not PCOS have any of the fertility meds been linked to problems later on in pregnancy?

Am I the only one that thinks doctors need to look into this?

Monika,

It's not your imagination. There's a PROVEN link between PCOS and PTL. There is no proven link between PCOS & IC (but I have strong suspicions, since there are so many of us here). The MOD is doing research on IC, which hopefully includes hormonally-induced IC.

In the meantime, make sure you have a GREAT doc who's familiar with high-risk situations. Make sure your progesterone is checked at your first OB visit (most of us need supplementation), and make sure you know the signs of PTL and IC. That's as far as "science" would have us take it. BUT, here's what I think: you should ask for more frequent cervical ultrasounds. If IC is caught in the early stages, the outcome could be much, much better. If at any point something doesn't seem right, insist on an immediate cervical ultrasound - don't let your doc pooh-pooh you away.

I've also written to all of my representatives at the state and federal level requesting that they introduce and/or support legislation tied to prematurity, PTL and IC. The more funding, the sooner scientists can come up with answers.

I told my perinatologist back in January that there MUST be a link between IC and PCOS. He sounded curious about it, actually. I told him that there are so many of us with these problems and it didn't seem like he doubted me. I just wish we could get some research orgs to start looking at this.

Viv - kudos for writing letters! That's a great idea.

My new OB/GYN (the one who delivered Rivi botched everything so badly he was fired) said that every "unexplained" case of IC she's seen has been in cysters. So she's more than willing to be VERY careful next pregnancy.

Im new here with pcos, and I also have IC. I really believe there is a link and told the dr abotu if after I was diagnosed. He really seemed interested in it too, but there really should be studies.

I've wondered the same thing. Hopefully the MOD research will shed some light on the IC thing. I also encourage you to make use of your docs - if you are thinking about posting 'should I call my doc' - just call your doc!

This is interesting - although I have not been diagnosed with PCOS, I did have preterm labor at 27 weeks. My cervix was 50% effaced & I was having regular contractions. The dr. never could explain why this happened to me - just said I had an "irritable uterus." I spent the rest of my pregnancy on terbutaline, bed rest and home monitoring b/c they could never completely stop the contractions (I averaged 5 to 6 an hour for the duration of the pregnancy.). Happily, my ob/gyn did specialize in high-risk, so I got good care and DD was born healthy and strong at 37 weeks. Still, it's interesting that this is another PCOS issue.
