As a PCOS "sufferer," I've gone through the process of diagnosis to treatment, and learning to live with the syndrome. Through a couple great doctors and some time, I'm finally seeing some results.
As a writer and editor, I've been bouncing around the idea (in the back of my head) about starting a PCOS-focused publication (hard copy...with a web presence, of course).
I NEED SOME OPINIONS, PLEASE!!!
In your opinion, do you believe there's a need for such a publication (a magazine? a newsletter?)? Why or why not?
If yes, what content is needed? What would make you read and purchase such a publication?
I believe such a publication is needed because, with the exception of the great community here on SoulCysters.com, the information about PCOS isn't being updated online.
I'd love to hear your thoughts, either here on this great site (thanks Kat....keep up the great work over at CNN!!!) or via my e-mail (lharvey@galaxycable.net).
I hope to hear from all of you. Please inundate my mailbox with your thoughts!
hey linda, where did you get your screen name? i'm from omaha, NE any connection?

LOSS OF MY BABY GIRL AT 23 WEEKS 11/01
Had Aidan Fraser on March 8,2003 at 2:05pm.... 7lbs 8 oz and 20 in. long!
had miss Riley Emerson on December 29,2004 at 4:51 , 7lbs 14oz and 20 1/4 inches long.
i LOVE the idea!!! i have yet to buy a book on pcos, because of money and because i'm afraid that it wont be current, or anything that i dont know already from reading here. i think having a newsletter or mag format would be a great thingfor those reasons. and it would help those who dont have internet access.
I think it is a great idea.
Something to keep us up to date (and in hard copy) of all of the new studies, articles, research, advances, etc. Whether that be in meds, alternative remedies, TTC, diagnosis ...

well i think a magazine would be great, but i would be concerned about getting it out and cost. I work in marketing and I could see it difficult to keep it going.
Would it be better to start a grassroots one on line better, like "The Onion"??
I think articles that discuss pcos symptoms and having ask the dr. section is good.
I think an infertility section
I think an exercise/low carb section is good
I think informative articles to battle this syndrome is good, plus a way to educate the masses.
just input

Absolutely - sign me up! I will be your first subscriber!
Things like articles to bring to the doctor, success stories of weight loss, pregnancy, coping with miscarriage, motherhood, etc. Basically you could even just take threads off of this board and use them as a basis for the magazine/newsletter. I'm not sure which would be the better of the two, because you would need to get advertisements from vendors for the magazine, but maybe you can get sponsors from some of the products that work best for us PCOS-ers.....Birth Control Pill manufacturers, acne meds, etc. Also a RE section?
Oh please - keep me informed on this as I would love to know how its going if you decide to go forth!

Your thoughts and specific info is great. And thank you also for being candid about keeping something like this afloat.
I dunno...with 5,000,000 to 10,000,000 suffering from PCOS, I'd like to think there's a market out there for this...including ob/gyns, endocrinologists, nutritionists, etc....who could help market it. Perhaps I'm overtly optimistic.
My next step is to get hammering away at a business plan and start procuring advertisers.
Keep the comments coming. I REALLY, REALLY appreciate them!
Thanks for the thoughts, ideas, candid views and comments. The more I think about this opportunity, the more excited I get. And perhaps I'm too optimistic, but I think it's doable.
I've finally dived into the business plan. I'm going to make at least an attempt at getting something up and running. I think the thing I'm "battling" right now is the realization of just how much I need to get done...I need to design a logo; I need to put together publicity pieces and an advertising rate sheet for this publication; I need to start compiling a database of potential advertisers.
*EYES CROSS*
But I'm up to the task. Keep your ideas and thoughts coming!!!! My initial goal is to have the first issue out by August 2004 or sooner. I plan to call it "PCOS Today," and I'm thinking it'll be a bi-monthly publication, maybe about 8 pages to start with. We'll see. I'll keep you posted.
