I find this so interesting because i went to a kinesiologist because i was frustrated with my dr for only suggesting the pill as a way of controlling pcos. anyway, the kinesiologist said i was low in magnesium and reading about the symptoms for someone being low in magnesium... that's me!!! i already have more energy just from two days taking mag.
After growing wary of taking so many pills throughout the day, I have started taking Liquid Calcium-Magnesium with Vitamin D3 Complex by Country Life. It's got a 2:1 ratio of Calcium to Magnesium (1000mg Calcium to 500mg Magnesium) and 400 I.U. of Vitamin D3. I take one cap full with dinner. Here's a link to the label:

I wasn't quite clear on the reason for the 2:1 ratio of Calcium to Magnesium, so I pulled this from the Nature's Sunshine website. (The naturopath I have seen recommends this line of supplements. I have ordered from them a few times, but I use their website for useful information all the time.)
Quote:
Calcium comprises half of all the minerals in the body. This formula also contains phosphorus, the second most abundant mineral in the body. It works with calcium.
This formulation provides calcium and phosphorus at a 2:l ratio. Magnesium is also added in the same 2:1 ratio with calcium. Without these important ratios, the body begins to lose one or more minerals before it can utilize them. Calcium is needed by the immune system and is critical to muscle contractions.
Phosphorus works synergistically with B vitamins to help maintain a proper fluid balance in the body. Vitamin D is added to help calcium do its job. At least 400 IU of vitamin D is needed on a daily basis, especially for those not getting enough sunshine (D is the “sunshine vitamin”).
Atkins also says that many people have absorption problems with magnesium, that it's possible to take too much and cause problems -- and that a good solution is to take baths/footsoaks with Epsom salts -- your body will just absorb what it needs without taking in too much.
Wow, that's really interesting!
I'll oftentimes soak in an Epsom Salts bath to ease muscle pain after working out, but I didn't know about the magnesium thing...

I actually started taking 250mg of Magnesium a day after looking on google for answers to some of the problems I was having with my body doing some weird stuff for a while. Everything I found led to a magnesium deficiancy. So I just went to CVS and bought it! I have been on it for 3 days now and feel so much better. No more bright green veins showing through my arms and also my moods are much more level. So far so good!
One of the treatments my Naturopath has me do is to take epsom salt baths.... for magnesium absorption.... Its also relaxing, and she also mentioned it will help immensely if you get really bad AF cramps. As I have both Endometriosis and PCOS--I am sure she saw the multiple benefits in this...
And you chocolate lovers, dark chocolate has magnesium too

Magnesium is an excellent pain reliever all around, works better for me than Advil or anything like that. I get it whenever I have my migraines, plus there's B-12 mixed in to help the absorption and stuff. I'll have to start taking the supplement and see if it helps. Thanks for the info!
Hi Everyone! I'm new to the site. I've found really amazing things here that sound like it will help alot! After reading what everyone has said sounds like I could use some Magnesium too! Especially if it does work as a pain reliever too. Do you think it would be good for my DH? It would be just as good for men wouldn't it?
Dr. Carolyn Dean's book The Miracle of Magnesium is the bible on Magnesium supplementation. If you can get a hold of a copy I highly recommend it.
As far as magnesium supplementation goes, the absolute best way to supply your body with the magnesium it needs is transdermally. That is you need to soak your feet for 20 minutes in the evening in a mixture of distilled or prill water and magnesium oil in equal parts. Just enough to cover your toes. You need to start out doing this every day for at least 2 weeks and possibly even 1 month. Then you can drop back to 2-3 times per week after that. The results can be amazing. You will sleep like a baby. The magnesium oil you need to use must be pure and clear not slightly yellow. The best place I have found to purchase the magnesium oil is from Health and Wisdom I can't post the link, but it is the words "health and wisdom" seperated by hyphens. The lady who runs this is Joan and she is wonderful. She has a wealth of information. I also highly recommend the magnesium laundry prills. You will youse 1/4 of the laundry detergent and your clothes will smell so wonderful it is hard to describe. All I can tell you is my mother noticed and I had to get her some for Christmas.
When I keep up with the foot soaking I feel great, sleep well, and some of my PCOS symptoms seem to be less severe. I don't think it is a cure all by any means, but I think it is one of the many pieces in this puzzle of PCOS.
If the oil is not an option the next best product to take is something called Natural Calm. It is a powder that you mix with water to make a tea. Again, take this at night as it will make you feel relaxed and sleepy. Magnesium deficiency is a common problem to those with anxiety and panic disorders. Please be aware that if you take too much magnesium at one time you will experience intestinal upset. The foot soaks work best for me since I cannot tolerate taking magnesium orally for the reason just posted. The foot soaks will not cause the intestinal issues that oral magnesium can.
Also, on another note, one of the reasons the calcium to magnesium ratios in people or way off is due to the fact that the ratio in most over the counter calcium magnesium supplements today is wrong. There is usually way too much calcium. The ratio should be different. I can't remember what it is supposed to be, but I remember a trusted source telling me that the combined supplement with the ratios closest to the correct amout is called Nerve Osteo by Country Life. However, those are huge horse pills and I have found that I can get most of my calcium from other sources.
There is a lot of information online about the effects of Magnesium deficiency. I bought some last night so hopefully it will help with PCOS and the lack of energy I have.
I've only been taking it for a few days, but I am a huge fan. I have so much more energy and I'm less depressed, and no more brain fog, which is great because the metformin has been worsening those symptoms. I realized that my prenatals didn't have magnesium, so I'm only taking 250 mg, but I think even that level is helping!
