I love my magnesium! However, I just want to point out that the links between low magnesium and insulin resistance show correlation, not necessarily causation. Carbohydrate metabolism tends to deplete certain minerals required for good glucose control, and hyperglycemic states cause the body to excrete even more of the minerals in the urine. So carb consumption would seem the original cause. But then the question is how to raise mineral levels effectively if our bodies are so busy excreting them. It requires blood sugar to be under control and limited carbs to help prevent further depletion, at least until we are in some sort of balance.
And BTW, it's not just magnesium. Chromium, manganese, zinc, copper, selenium, etc., are all very important and all tend to be depleted in people with PCOS. A good multi-mineral supplement, taken multiple times throughout the day, seems best. |
