M.D. Advice: An irregular period could be a sign of diabetes.
"Many Women are walking around with polycystic ovarian syndome [PCOS}, thinking that their irregular periods are just a part of who they are,'" says Wrica Marsh, M.D., a reproductive endocrinology and fertility fellow at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago. " It's a very underdiagnosed condition." A collection of variable traits (which include ovarian cysts), some symptoms of PCOS (such as increased facial hair) result from higher levels of the hormone androgen in the bloodstream.

The concerns doctors have, however, run even deeper than just diagnosing PCOS. As many as 45 percent of women with PCOS also have iether impaired glucose tolerance, which can be a precursor to diabetes, or Type 2 diabetes itself. The link is complex, but women with PCOS who are overweight and have a family member with Type 2 diabetes appears to be most at risk. Suspect something? Call your doctor.
