Unhappy PCOS? Metformin? LOST! HELP!

I was diagnosed with PCOS at the age of 16. I am 25 and still not pregnant. NO birth control since the age of 18. I had my last surgery in Aug of 2002 and my Doc said i showed no signs of PCOS. My periods have been reular for the last 2 years. I am getting ready to start METFORMIN 2000mg a day and i am confused. The doctors have no answers for me. Regular periods-no signs of PCOS- and still not pregnant????????????

Please help!!

Melissa

If you have regular periods and the Dr's don't know if you are insulin restistant or PCOS, it seems odd that you would be put on the drug. Have you had labs drawn? What do your FSH, LH, fasting glucose, testosterone and free androgen look like? Have you had a HSG done to see if your tubes are clear?

I would want a firmer diagnosis before I started PCOS treatment.

During my last surgery he tested both of my tubes and they were fine. I have had 4 laproscopic surgeries and on my last one he said for the first time i showed no signs of PCOS. I still dont understand why I am not conceiving on my own. He still put me on the MET after he told me I had no signs of PCOS the last surg. I guess because he figures it will come right back. I have not taken birtcontrol since the age of 18 and I am 25 and still no baby so I feel the PCOS will come back. I am really confused????
The hair growth is getting worse not better and that is confusing to me also. I have lost 72 pounds in the last year but that was on my own not with MET. That was one of the things the Doc wanted me to do was to lose weight. I feel I may lose even more with the MET. I have not started it yet. I plan to in 1 week.
Please help I am confused????

Melissa: let me tell you something. Anytime you are this confused about a mediciation and if it's right for you....you have a responsibility to learn more before you take it. You need a serious heart to heart with your physician to determine his reasons for the drug. If he knows nothing about your insulin levels or even if you have PCOS, it seems irresponsible for him to take this course of action. If it were me, I would get another opinion, or at best a proper diagnosis before I am handed a bottle of drugs. You deserve better than that.

All the best!
