I'm really confused. I am 5'8" and weigh about 120 (BMI 18.5) and was diagnosed via ultrasound after coming off pill to TTC and had no periods for nearly a year. My blood tests were completely normal, I have never struggled with weight, skin problems or excessive hair, nor do I have any family history. I was very confused....I did do alot of excersice and someone suggested I may have multicystic ovaries NOT polysystic. Apparently they look very similar but not the same??? I was given medication to bring on menses but it didn't work so I stopped excersing and fell pregnant naturally within 4 weeks (without having a period) and had my son 8 months ago. My periods returned after I stopped breastfeeding and I now have a 34 day cycle (last 3 months) and I think I ovulate as my BBT rises at the right time and stays high for 13/14days. Do I have PCOS or not???? Has anyone heard of multicystic ovaries. Could any of you have the same? Any experience or comments would be helpful. Thank you
It sounds a bit wierd, and sounds a little like me. I have not had an ultrasound. I was told it was pcos based on my period suddenly stopping for several months and LH/fsh ratio that was consistent with pcos. I have none of the other symptoms, so I am ot sure I really have pcos, but in any case ny obgyn is pretty sure I am not ovulating. I see a RE in a few weeks, so hopefully I can confirm what is going on. But, I don't fit hte profile either. I am thin, always have been, had nomal periods for 20 years! (even when not on bcp), and all the hormones except lh/fsh were normal. IT sounds like you need a second opinion.
Also, congrats on the baby!!
I ave not heard of multicycsstic ovaries, so I can't help you there.
I too stopped having period after I increased my exercise. I had the string of pearls on my ovaries which is how I got my PCOS diagnosis. I don't have any other symptoms ( I've gained weight recently - due to less exercise) I quit running as much ( from 25-30 mpweek to 15 mpweek) and i got AF back. Not a 28 day cycle. I even got preg. my first month off runnin but it resulted in a mc due to low progesterone. Anyway I have often wondered the same thing - But i do have a family history of PCOS and type 2 diabetes. Do you?
Also - Ive hard that some women can have mild PCOS.
Hi
Thanks for your replys. No I don't have a family history that I know of but I did get a second opinion from a specialist and he said that I do have PCO but not PCOS? I had more advanced blood tests and I have no hormone irregularities nor am I IR, I have a regular period and i chart my BBT and I would appear that I ovulate...certainly sometimes? Very bizzarre but doctor said you can have PCO and not have the syndrome....and apparently I am unlikely ever to get the syndrome? He has prescribed me Met and Clomid as I am TTC..not sure it will work if I don't have the symptoms the drugs are supposed to combat...but it's worth a try!
Sounds similar to me. My LH/FSH were at a perfect 1:1 ratio, and I had regular periods until I went off the pill last year. Then they tested my LH:FSH 3 more times, and my results came out like this: 3:1, 1:1, 2:1. Crazy, right? LH/FSH isn't a reliable enough way to dx. My testosterone was "normal" as well, but mycurrent RE said it is a tiny bit elevated. I also have no hirsutism or acne, and I'm underweight. At any rate, having PCO does increase your risk of developing the syndrome, according to British research. I definitely know I had PCO but did not develop PCOS until coming off the pill. If the metformin and other drugs help, great, but it sounds like you're between a dx. Are you doing a low GI diet?
can someone please explain the differnece between having PCO and having PCOS?....
