I am newly diagnosed with PCOS. The thing is the only symptom I have is the irregular periods. I am not over weight, I don't have any trouble with blood sugars, I don't have an excessive hair anywhere, and no skin problems. I keep reading about PCOS and everything I read talks of all of these symptoms. I am starting to doubt my drs. diagnosis. Does anyone else not have all these symptoms??
Ask your doctor what he based your diagnosis on? Did he do an ultrasound to determine if you have cystic ovaries? Did he do fasting bloodwork to determine your fasting insulin and hormone levels? The next time you visit, take him/her a list of symptoms and ask which ones led him to diagnose you.
I'm almost finished reading a book by Dr. Lee (about Premenopause and it's effect on 30-50 year olds) and he talks at length about how common messed up hormone levels are, the side effects seen (just like PCOS side effects) and he even mentioned it being fairly common, and normal, for women to have cysts on their ovaries at different times in life. BUT, never once has he mentioned the term "PCOS", he's more focused on the horrible effects things like birth control pills, bad diet, lack of exercize, and environmental toxins, etc. have on our bodies and what we need to do to reverse this.
He thinks Dr.'s aren't looking to fix the root of the problem, but instead are focusing on treating the symptoms (which involves high-dollar medications from the pharmaceutical companies). His solution for 95% of women's problems seems to be Progesterone cream, which is sold over the counter.
Anyway, I wonder if PCOS is being over-diagnosed? Getting diagnosed with PCOS seems a lot more formidable then simply being told 'your hormones are out of wack, here's why, and here's what we need to do to get them regulated and then you'll be fine'.
Yeah, I am. Diagnosed yesterday. Have no symptoms at all EXCEPT ONE irregualr period(I've always had regular periods). The Dr confirmed the diagnosis by my LH/FSH ratio, which was 16/6 (Normally both should be equal). In PCOS LH is raised n FSH mildly decreased. Thats what confirmed my diagnosis.
I'm not trying to conceive but will b in a month or so.
Sigh!!
I am the same way. Only symptom I had was irregular periods. I am a normal weight, and active person. I went on BC pills and then stopped because I hated the way I felt. Doc wanted to put me on Metformin but I refused. I have now had a regular period for 6 months is a row!! Unbelieveable to me!! I have lowered my carb intake (some, not all) and increased my protein. I also exercise 5-6 days per week, 1 hour or more. I know that this is what has made me have a regular cycle. Oh, I was also diagnosed through a blood draw- my LH to FSH ratio was 4 to 1!

Most experts suggest that PCOS is actually one of the most UNDERdiagnosed endocrine disorders.
BTW, PCOS does not have a definitive diagnosis. It's a diagnosis of EXLUSION:
Quote:
In 1990, the National Institutes of Health formed a group to investigate PCOS. Even though no consensus was reached regarding the name of this disorder, which remains controversial to date, diagnostic criteria were determined.[51] The consensus was that women who present with hyperandrogenism and chronic anovulation, in the absence of congenital adrenal disorders, Cushing's syndrome, hyperprolactinemia, or tumors should be diagnosed with PCOS.[52]
There are also several 'variations' of pcos - which explains the variation of symptoms: http://www.wdxcyber.com/dxinf001.htm

No PCOS isn't overdiagnosed..it's hard to get a doctor to recognize it at all. Now if you're saying that we all jump and think we have PCOS that could be.
But I have had my symptoms right after I started my period, and the symptoms are worse since I'm 42 years old.
Now about DR.Lee...I agree with hormonal chicken, beef, etc that the goverment does to our food..makes it worse. That is why I'm trying to eat organic foods.

I'm curious how old you are and whether you've been on the pill awhile. I'm 27, and have a similar deal...not overweight etc. only thing that got me investigating was my irregularity. I have a few stray eyebrows (ok they are chin hairs) but I'm mediterranean and it goes with the territory.....it's minimal anyhow.
My understanding is everyone shows different systems.
I'm 24 and I was on the pill for 8 years. No problems before taking the pill. Went off of it in March didn't get a period...just started Provera to make me have one.
