Hi all....well my journey started last year when a doc at my practice (not my own doctor) finally listened to me! Shock horror...I have been struggling with my weight for years, sometimes I am lucky to lose just a lb in a month! Anyway, she asked me if I had heard of PCOS...funnily enough I had just started researching PCOS on the internet and realised that I had a few symptoms but mainly the inability to lose weight like "normal" people when they eat healthily and work out at the gym.... so she sent me for blood tests which revealed that my SHBG wasn't right...I had the pleasure of going back to my own doc for the results so she went a bit quiet and then said hmmm, we'd best send you for a scan. BTW, I had to research what SHBG was on the net as she didn't have a clue! I soon realised it was a pointer to PCOS...so I went for my scan and it revealed normal ovaries with just a few follies and also a very small endometrial polyp....so she then referred me to a gynae/pcos clinic and it's here that I got confused and annoyed.... Now, maybe my situation is a bit unusual here..hubby and I are both second timers marriage wise and he is 52 with 2 kids from his prev marriage and I am 38, no kids, so time is ticking on....what I want to know is can I get pregnant cos even though we haven't actively been ttc, I haven't....also my BMI is classed as obese, 32.8 so I want to get rid of the weight as I know being pregnant will add the lbs on big style and that has health implications on me and baby.....I have lost weight I was 15 stone Jan 2006 and I am now 13.11....I reached my lowest weight in Nov 2006 at 13.10.....anyway back to the clinic so I say to the doc....this is me....My af's are regular, basically always have been....I am a bit hairy, I can be a bit spotty, I did have hormonal migraines which were so severe at one stage I had to use wafer Imigran whick knocked me out completely but once I lost weight they did go and attacks are now rare...the main issue is weight....and she said well I don't think you have PCOS .....needless to say I wasn't agreeing with her...she seemed to base her findings on the SHBG blood test and that's all my own doc sent her - none of the other blood tests which had not been done at the right times in my cycle ( I found that out thanks to this website the night before!) and that my ovaries weren't poly cystic.....Hello....every single PCOS website I have seen states that you can have PCOS even though you may not have poly cystic ovaries..ok it may be rarer but seems to exist....so I asked to have the bloods redone at day 2 and day 21 (so she could tell I ovulate by just looking at me, eh!?) and also a full thyroid function blood test.....which she agreed to.....she was nice enough but I was absolutely fuming when I came out.....I think some docs on the NHS just simply expect you to accept what they say, maybe they don't think we use sites like this for research....anyway..sorry I have rambled a bit....if any one had had similar experiences, it would be great to hear from you! hi
welcome to sc sorry this has happened to you. could you change gp? that;s what i had to do to get some help for my pcos. Either if you could see a different gp at the same surgery?? Or like me actually change surgery?? hope you get some help soon.
eva
Hi, welcome to SC! Sorry your Dr wanted to just shrug everything off! Fortunately my Dr is awesome and she's the one that tested me because I had unexplained weight gain and couldn't get pg.
I don't think my ovaries are polycystic, I do Ovulate on my own (which is why I don't think they are) and my numbers are a lot closer to normal that a lot of people, so it goes to show that there is a range for PCOS, and I think you should look into a different Dr!
Good luck!

Thanks for your replies so far ladies..good to know I'm not the only one...
Aydenn2angels - your post is really interesting, you know I want to print it out and show my doctor at the clinic!
As I am on the verge of AF I can get my day 2 bloods done at the right time, this time, although I have noted on this website, that day 3 is quoted..does it matter? Do you have any other symptoms?
Eva37 - when I went to see another doc at my practice, she was a lot more sympathetic, unfortunately not long after that, she went off sick and has had major surgery and so won't be back at the practice for a long time, maybe never....my own doctor is a weird one but I was glad she had the blood results and had to take back a bit of what she's said, basically, there's nothing wrong with me! The thing is you know there is something wrong, you just don't know what it is...
camarofanatic90 - no, my doc didn't talk about met, not sure how appropriate it would be....or would it help? I am on Reductil at the moment to try and help me lose weight.....hmmmm...I'll mention that on another post!
I'm going to give the new blood tests a go and then see what the cons says..haven't got long to wait, next appt is 25th May.
Just wanted to say hello and welcome. It definately can be very stressful getting the right diagnosis, and getting a dr to listen to you. Good luck with the retesting.
Hi all, well on AF now, so I am going to get day 2 bloods done tomorrow, followed up by day 21 bloods, also have to try and see my doc tomorrow for bp testing as I am on Reductil so busy day, also busiest day work wise normally and should be going to the gym...arghhh!!!!
Tinka14
Tinka14, I'm pretty sure mine was tested on day 7 (I'd have to go back and look at the results) Here are my numbers if you'd like to show them to your Dr!
HDL-52
LH-6.4
insulin-10.6
testosterone-38
free testosterone-1.19
%free-3.14
TSH-2.56
Cholesterol-206
triglyceride-165
FSH-4.2
LDL-121
The only symptoms that I basically have is unexplained weight gain, never had the same cycle length (never O'd on the same day, but always had a 12 day LP) and not being able to get pg.
I learned from someone on this board that one of the key giveaways of my numbers is that LH and FSH are reversed, I guess FSH is supposed to be higher than LH.
One thing I noticed in your other post was that you said that you're not on met, it's actually quite appropriate for PCOS'ers and it also helps with the weight. It also helps a lot of people get pg (it helped me)

I'm one of those who doesn't have cysts on my ovaries. I'm sorry your doctor isn't in the know about PCOS. If you they are willing to order the tests your request and you are willing to do the research you may still come out okay. Maybe you can get a recommendation for another doctor in your area while you're go through this round of bloodwork.

Hi again ladies - got my blood tests done this morning at the hospital, 2 nice vials of the stuff!
Aydenn2angels - ahhh - better explain our lovely system in the UK re: docs and hospitals.....in the UK, we are lucky enough (or not) to have a National Health Service (NHS) which to cut a very long story short means we don't pay for going into hospital, testing, staying in hospital....we do pay for this service in taxes though and we do have to pay for medications if you work, as I do, so it's good in 1 way...this means that I have a local doctor's surgery, they are General Practitioners (GP's) so if you have a good one, they know lots about everything and if you have a bad one, they know nothing! So they are the ones who refer you to a hospital, of course you have a choice in which local surgery you join, but that choice can be limited. You can if you have private health insurance be treated privately and if after the blood tests, I'm still getting no-where then I will look at going down this route. I'm quite sure my GP doesn't know much about PCOS at all, never mind Metformin.....for me, I want to lose the weight first before ttc....I really don't want to put on 4 stone....!!!!
PBLayzod - thanks for your reply, I was beginning to think I'd dreamt you can have PCOS without the cysts.....to think this woman at the hospital is meant to be a specialist!!!
Well, that's a little crazy! That system would confuse me! (or should I say that DOES confuse me! LOL) I hope that you will be able to get the treatment you need then!
