I have been diagnosed with Pcos for 3 1/2 years now. I have done several insulin rest. test and found out that I am not. It is driving me crazy because I can not conceive. I have tried clomin and I am now not able to take it. It makes my PCOS worse, and some cysts rupture. If anyone has any advice on what I should do or try please let me know.
You can me on Metformin and not be insulin resistant. Maybe your doctor should try you on that because in many women with PCOS the Metformin works almost as well as the Clomid for regulating cycles and inducing ovulation.

Many women "pass" the tests for insulin resistance, but still respond positively from proper treatment of PCOS. THe best treatment is a low carb diet, exercise, and metformin (1500-2550mg per day). No one knows exactlly why women who are not IR still start Oing from metformin. Good luck and +++ vibes!

Dx-2004 while ttc #2
Currently: 2000mg metformin
Not officially ttc, but not preventing!
What is your fasting insulin reading? Is it under 10? I just read something on this board that says another way to diagnose IR is glucose divided by insulin < 5. I've never heard that, and it doesn't work for me because for me that number is 85 / 13 = 6.5, but maybe it is another way to look at it for some people. I am definitely IR. I have acanthosis nigracans, excess hair, and hypoglycemic episodes.
It is very difficult to diagnose IR with simple bloodwork. The most accurate test is the hyperinsulinemic euglycemic clamp study. It is very expensive and time consuming and usually only done by researchers.
I am not considered IR, but I started Metformin (1500 mg) and it immediately brought my periods back and got me ovulating again (in fact, I hadn't worked up to my full dose yet when my first period came). I conceived within 5 cycles.

I also wanted to add that I am not insulin resistant and Metformin helped me.
Has you Doctor checked your testosterone levels? Metformin brought those numbers down for me.
I began having regular menstrual cycles for the first time ever on Metformin.
Here's a tip on taking it to avoid side effects:
Met Dosage
First three days: 1/2 pill once a day w/ Breakfast (250mgs a day total)
Next three days: 1/2 pill w/ Breakfast and 1/2 pill with Lunch (500mgs a day total)
Next three days: 1/2 pill w/ each meal (750mgs a day total)
Next three days: 1 pill w/Breakfast, 1/2 pill w/Lunch, 1/2 pill w/Dinner (1,000mgs a day total)
Next three days: 1 pill w/Breakfast, one pill w/ Lunch, 1/2 pill w/ Dinner (1,250mgs a day total)
Next three days: 1 pill with each meal (1500mgs a day).
Later on I moved up to 2000mgs a day
You can change up dosage every five days instead of three (if you are still problems). I really hope that it will work for you. I will never give up my Met.

Medications and Supps listed on my profile.
I joined this board awhile ago, when I was first diagnosed and it scared the hell out of me so I stopped stopping by, but I am also PCOS without IR, my endo and my gyno are in the same physicians group and after 3 rounds of fasting and blood work within a year, not to mention 3 ultrasounds of my uterus, they came to the conclusion that I have PCOS but I just have high levels of male testerone, they tested my sugar over and over and it was perfect every time, I have no cysts anywhere or any period problems, but I do gain weight around the middle like a man and I do have a little to much hair. They concluded that my hormone levels were a genetic abnormality something to do with both of my parents and DHEA something( sorry they told me quite a long time ago),so I have PCOS because of the hormones but not because of my sugar or that I was insulin resistant. My thyroid was also tested and it was great, so was cholestrohl(sp?) along with triglycerides(which is why my gyno had a hard time believing I had PCOS and why she kept testing), and I actually have low blood pressure as well. I have always been around the same weight since I was 15, but it is very hard for me to lose weight. I have no problems conceiving, but my first son was born at 24 weeks in Nov 05 and he is a beautiful healthy child today. I lost my second son last July 06 at 22 weeks, because they caught that I had Incomptent cervix too late, though my gyno says IC is completely unrelated to PCOS. My doctors have put me on phentermine and if I dont see decent results within 2 months they are going to add Metformin. But I am on the BC pill as well cause I do not want to try for another baby for a while. So that is is basically a very long winded answer to answer Yes I have PCOS but I am not insulin resistant.
I just wanted to add that I have PCOS without IR and metformin works very well for me. I don't have any trouble with GI side effects. I started out on 500 mg and then went to 1000 mg and to 2000 mg and two to three days after moving up to 2000 mg/day I got my cycle. Metformin works well with or without IR. Best of luck!
