My Mood: Points: 2,033.26 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 2,033.26 | PCOS in a nutshell, your thoughts? My husband grew up in western kentucky, summarize most all of his family lives here as well. When I moved here, it was a culture shock for me being from California. I wasn't used to all the 'southern hospitality' AKA: Tons of food that's all dipped, smothers, fried, covered in fat.
It seems like every few months we all get together for a big birthday party or dinner or something. I bring a lot of my own food, since I can't eat gluten/wheat. (Though they still say "I didn't use any wheat, it's just regular white flour!" >.<) But sometimes I get asked about my PCOS, which none of them understand. I try to summarize as best I can, but I could use some help.
I've seen long paragraphs and pages explaining to family what it is, but what if they only wanna know the basics? I'm sure most of you have a couple sentences you use when people ask what PCOS is, and I'd like to hear them.
Keep it a couple sentences long, and no big medical terms. This would be to my husband's family that care enough to ask but don't wanna hear a 10 minute essay. Thanks, I look forward to hearing your answers! ^.^ |

My Mood: Points: 4,492.34 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 4,492.34 | Here's what I say: My hormones are unbalanced which causes me to process insulin inefficiently. What this means is that when my body gets glucose, some of it gets processed to make energy (which is what would normally happen), but a lot of it isn't processed and then gets converted to fat, which means that I have a hard time losing weight. The wacky hormones also contribute to acne, excess hair, etc.
How's that?

The way I would explain it to them is that my hormones are screwed up, and my body can't tolerate the 'good' foods anymore and it would go straight to the belly instead of the hips.
I'm also on Met, so I would let them know that after just a few bites, any visiting that they wanted to do with me would be from behind the bathroom door.

My husband says it's mostly the eastern part, but I've never been there. *shrug*
I was on Met for about 3 months of my life when I first started birth control and it was horrible. I had to eat every 3 hours or I would get headaches, the shakes, sometimes I couldn't breath, and the horrible nausea. I still can't believe I dealt with that for 3 whole months. I will never ever go back to do. Lucky for me I suppose I only had once when the medication messed with my stomach... but boy it was bad. x.x |

I've only had problems with the Met in the beginning and when my dr wrote the script for 1 1000 mg pill a day instead of the 2 500 mg a day.
