Default PCOS or PCO?

I was talking to my friend who is a pediatrician and who also had PCOS. She had three kids eight years after trying. She told me that there is a difference between PCO and PCOS. She said that I don't have the syndrome but I probably have polycystic ovaries. I am not overweight (even though I've put on 15 pounds but I was skinny before), I don't have irregular periods and my extra weight is mostly on my butt. So I guess the syndrome is when you are IR and have all the classic symptoms, right? I have hair on my arms and legs, acne and hair loss. I am going to be ttc soon God willing and she told me that in order to have safe pregnancies, that my hormones should be balanced. My testosterone was slightly elevated (89 and the highest on the doc's scale was 76).

Anyway, does PCO develop into PCOS? I'm scared that it will. What medication can I use while ttc?

No, that's not the criteria. Not all women have all of the symptoms.

The excess hair is possibly a sign of androgen excess - one of the signs of pcos in some women

Best to see a doctor familiar with PCOS to get proper testing and diagnosis. Excess hair, acne, etc could also be a sign of something else...

Your friend IS correct that PCO is different from PCOS, however.

When you see your doctor, bring in a journal with your menstrual history. Many women who think they have 'regular' periods are not actually having 'normal, ovulatory' periods.
