You do not have to have a positive lab result, but your doctor should look at your symptoms and family history. I am on Met, so my labs would be "normal", but I do have insulin resistance (IR). Even when they were not "normal" they were "mild" and still I had a lot of symptoms of IR. I had acanthosis nigricans (AN), a very common sign of IR or diabetes, and most of my spots have faded. The ones under my arms were very dark from puberty until I started cinnamon. You can get them all over including your neck, thighs, elbows, underarms, etc. Most kids with diabetes have AN, but you don't have to have diabetes to get AN.
