DH and I are applying for adoption in the next few months. I'm worried about not passing the physical because of my PCOS. I am insulin resistant and pre-diabetic. We are adopting through Catholic Charities. I know we have to pass a physical as part of the homestudy process. I am interested in others' experiences and wondering if this syndrome will affect our approval. Thank you for any responses!

We didn't have any issues with the physicals. It's mainly just to show that you're healthy enough to raise children. I don't remember my DR even mentioning the PCOS. When I listed my medications, they noted the metformin and BP medicine and wanted to know why I took it. Not really a big deal.
They want to make sure you're going to be able to keep up with the children in your care and not have health problems that will interfere with that.
It is most likely that your DR will state that you're healthy enough to care for children.
Granted, we went the Foster Care adopt route. International adoptions have additional rules per country. I'm sure domestic adoption agencies have guidelines as well (probably along similar lines as foster care though).
Thanks for asking this question. I was going to ask the same thing in a few months. I know that some international agencies, have a weight limit. I just had gastric bypass. I am going to try one last time and start the process.
FYI: my husband was born this way. Parents didnt conceive right away and they went thru adoption......almost had the baby home, and find out they were pregnant.
Good luck

I stressed a LOT about my physical! But my PCOS wasn't an issue at ALL. Basically, as Susan said, they just want to make sure you aren't going to keel over next week and leave a child high and dry. I think another thing they look for is whether you take care of the problems you DO have responsibly. I had borderline high blood pressure when I went for my physical, so the doctor and I talked about the best way to work on that (diet and exercise) and came to an agreement about a plan going forward. My willingness to address the issue seemed to be just as good as not having any problems at all.
Assuming you're adopting domestically, I don't think any of you will have trouble! Just be honest and upfront and you should be fine.
