Question PCOS questions

Hey Everyone-

I want to know if anyone knows why certain people get PCOS? Is it heredity, genetics, luck of the draw? I have been toa few doctors and each one has told me something different. One told me you get it from your father, another one told me something different. Any ideas?

Thanks a bunch!
Erin

my doctors said sth similar - " it has been with you" since you're born, even when you didn't know about it. and will be with you till you die" - which was not that convenient since I had no signs up to 6 months ago and I do have a daughter 8 yrs old. but now it seems hard to conceive. and from what I've read it can be either hereditary or diabet. dont worry - you can learn to manage it - as my doc said (he was a greek) around 50% of hte greek women have PCOS.

One statistic said that about 80% of all women with type 2 diabetes when tested the results show they have PCOS. Some stats say that at least 5 to 10% of all women in the U.S. have PCOS. Not sure why some other nations have a lower PCOS rate, but the genetic link would explain that I guess.

I think it's genetic. My Mom has it (even after menopause), so do probably a lot of my female cousins (only 3 have been DXed) and my niece who was DXed around the time I was I think. I think my MIL might have it, also. One of my older relatives said that LOTS of women back in our famliy history (Mom's Father's side) showed classic PCOS symptoms. It seems that if it is genetic it can be passed from either Mom to child or Dad to child.

There is another thread about this and someone mentioned the Male PCOS-type thing.

I've had symptoms since about age 10, and I think I was born with it. I am watching my daugter's diet as to help prevent some PCOS symptoms from being worse early on for her in case she did inherit it from me or DH.

Some docs are saying that it might be due to a rush of hormones while we were still in the womb. I don't know how they are going to prove that.

From my understanding, you have PCOS all your life, even if you have a full hysterecomy or go into natural menopause.
