I was just diagnosed with PCOS a couple of weeks ago. Since then I have been reading away, and I have noticed a couple of mentions of sleep apnea. I was diagnosed with sleep apnea years ago and I have had surgeries to correct it, most notably a uvoplasty (sp) (shortening of the soft pallate). Anyway, what is the connection between PCOS and Sleep Apnea? I'm not sure if this is the best message board to post in, but I am a newbie.

I've heard other Cysters mention having sleep apnea, but I don't know if it's related to PCOS or not. I don't know if any studies have been done, but there have been studies showing a relation between sleep apnea and weight which is something quite a few of us have a problem with. I don't know if I have sleep apnea, but my Dad did and my FIL does, so it might be related to male PCOS at least.
Without reading the articles mentioned by Kat, I'd say some women with PCOS have it because they are severly overweight which can cause the sleep apnea because your neck gets fat, and your airway gets smaller. Others like me have probably always had it. Although I am in the severly overweight category, my doctor says my short neck and wide tongue along with a few other physical characteristics would cause me to have sleep apnea even if I was thin.

Thanks Kat. I'll look at the research. When I was diagnosed with Sleep Apnea, I was not overweight, though I could lose about 30 lbs now. My surgery corrected my snoring, but I never had another sleep study to examine my apnea, but overall, I feel like my sleep has improved.

I have sleep apnea as well and I was told it is linked to pcos and im 80 pounds over weight. But the dr said even if i was thin i would probably experience it still.
