PCOS Story I was diagnosed with PCOS at the age of 13. I first got my period at 11 and it was highly irregular. Also as puberty began I started getting lovely things like side-burns and huge amounts of weight gain.
I was initially "treated" with hormone shots. I don't think my doctor had much experience with this and it showed. I then moved on to birth control pills and stayed on those from ages 14-23.
Around age 23-24 I started having mood swings and the pills were no longer resulting in a monthly period, so I went off the pills. In the short term my PCOS symptoms got worse (more hair, etc), but also I did get a bit taller and my chest got much larger. Perhaps all of those years on the pill suppressed some natural growth. Who's to say?
Around this time my mother, who I believe also had PCOS, died of ovarian cancer. She had less than stellar care, so I decided to seek out an alternative route of treatment for my symptoms.
I started Reiki in 2003 and starting in 2006 I have been on a regime of supplements have have helped me have my period each month. As time has gone on I've also integrated yoga and acupuncture into my routine. I am currently doing a no wheat, no gluten, no sugar, and no dairy diet to find out what my body reacts most strongly to. |
