Don't hold me to this... but if you are talking like on the back of your neck, under your arms (armpits) some have it in the groin...

I'm not sure what the NAME of it is, I know there are quite a few cysters on here that do... BUT someone said it is a sign of insulin resistance and that those dark patches of skin are where you body is throwing the insulin.

For me, starting the IR diet and metforming had dramatically lightened the color of them and size. They are still there, still quite veiwable, but in less than a month they've gotten about 1/4 smaller.

Hope this helps!
I'm sure anoyther cyster on here can let you know more!

What its called is acanthosis nigricans. It is very common in people that have IR. It is in essense the extra insulin deposits on the skin and causes a stain. Usually weight loss helps it as well as the dermotologist can prescibe Retin-A which has seemed to work in some. Your Met may need to be upped and you might like to try some herbs, but overall I have noticed since I have been losing it has faded. I HTH....

I used to be VERY IR and had that black ring on the back of my neck. I tried to scrub it off not knowing what it was until it bled (I even used a brillo pad once-don't try it!). Since I lost a bunch of weight, it is completely gone. My insulin and sugar levels are quite good now. I still weigh 278 lbs, though, so I have a lot more to go!

Interesting, I didn't realize it was actually the insulin making the pigmentation.

Wow, I have dark rough patches across the back of my neck, too! I showed it to my doc a few days ago, and she told me she thought it was a fungal infection, and prescribed an anti-fungal cream. Should I trust her and use it anyway? Because I'm not so sure, now, after reading this explanation, it makes much for sense to me!! Hmm....

I have it too! my Pcp is so frickin' awesome, he told me to use selsun blue.
Yes, you read right ladies. Apply it to affected area overnight and wash off in the morning. May take more than one application. It works like a charm!

I would be finding a new dr who specializes in PCOS and the symptomes of it. Or find as much info as you can on it and print it up and take it to your dr and tell them to get educated on it. Holy cow, thats not good. Even my dr knew what it was. Thought i will admit he didn't know what caused it, and said i was the first person he's ever had come in with pcos, and that any info i could give him would be wonderful. I was in about 2 weeks ago and handed him a binder of over 100 pages as well as a cd of the medifocus book. He was extreamly greatful.

i have to say i know exactly what you mean. When i was growing up everyone thought i was either alergic to my necklaces, or i wasn't showering. You know it's the most embarressing thing when your in school.

Anyhow one times my mom thought i hadn't scrubbed it, she took one of those facial buff pads, or loaf sponges and scrubbed my neck so hard, it hurt, and there was one hell of a red mark. And when it didn't go away she looked at me and goes well that didn't work........I was like well duh.....and i've got it under my arms, and insides of my thigh, and around my waste.

and gbwmn I will be trying your trick even thought my family has said it's gotten lighter. But i will try that trick and see if it works.

blessed be ladies

I have a big patch on my neck, and everyone thinks it's a hickey I don't think there is any way to lighten it other than cover it up. I have had it so long I don't even think about it til I talk about PCOS or someone mentions it.

Hey Jun Keeter, it will lighten it up especially if you do it two or three times consecutively.

Call me strange, but I really don't mind it at all. Whenever someone says something, it gives me the oportunity to tell them about PCOS. If they don't notice it, and I still get the chance, I will point to it and say that this is one of the symptoms - so I guess it's my PCOS badge!

This same thing happened to me. One doctor told me it was a fungal infection, then a few months later, a different doctor told me it was eczema (sp?). Could she have been wrong too?
