Default PCOS, are they changing the name?

Hi there, I read recently that PCOS was going to be called something different. Anyone know if this is going to happen, and what it will be changed too?

PCOS has always been called by various names. In fact, I call it "the syndrome with 6 names" because everybody calls it something different.

Here are some of them:
* PCOS
* Insulin Resistance
* Syndrome W
* Syndrome X
* Metabolic Syndrome
* Pre-Diabetes

IMHO, PCOS is the worst name because most people with this syndrome do NOT have cysts! Insulin Resistance is a hard name for people to understand b/c I told that to a nurse and she assumed I was TAKING insulin. (I said, "I'm insulin resistant, insulin is the last thing in the world I need!) The letter names are just confusing. Pre-diabetes is just plain scary. Metabolic Syndrome is the one preferred by my doctor.

I've known the other name for PCOS was Stein-Leventhal (sp?) syndrome.

Not all women with PCOS are insulin resistant/pre-diabetic etc.

And not all of us have cysts either. (Most of us don't!) So it is just a badly named syndrome no matter how you slice it!

But there are men who are insulin resistant/pre-diabetic who definately don't have cysts on their ovaries

It's a bad name, for sure, but ^those^ are not synonymous with pcos. Stein-Leventhal, as Feb mentioned, is, however, an alternative name for pcos.
