What would you consider to be over weight?

I was taking 1500 Met time release for about 2 years. My cylcles were 35-45 days apart. I swithced to reg Met 3 x's per day.
In two months I became pregnent. I am 38 years old and had to have an I.U.I. and Repronex to conceive my first and 30 years.
This has completely shocked out family, but I know it was changing the way I took my Met.
It was recommended to me that thinner women with PCOS should NOT use time Release Met. I am about 135 lbs. Hope this helps.

Momzducky, I think bmi over 25 is considered overweight.

You should be able to find BMI calculators online. You just enter your height and weight and it calculates it.

I am kinda leary of this BMI. It states that I am normal. But I think that just because this says that I may be normal doesnt mean that I dont have fat on my body. There might be a person who is the same height and weight , but that may have more muscle to them. HUMMM! confusing.

Momzducky,
I was actually talking to my Doctor about the whole BMI thing last week. She also was a little skeptical of the way the BMI system works...it doesn't account for frame size, or muscle mass. According to the chart my perfect weight is 146 pounds. I'm over 5'9 and at one point I actually was 145 pounds and had to totally restrict my calorie intake to maintain that weight. I used to beat myself up on the whole weight thing...all my friends are mostly small little petite women....it is after all only a number, right?

Right! I think a women is always going to think she is overweight reguardless what someone says or what a chart says. Some of us are confident about it, and some are not.

It 'works' fine when doctors use it as it was designed - as a screening tool...not a diagnostic tool:

From the Centers for Disease Control:

Quote:
How is BMI used?

BMI is used as a screening tool to identify possible weight problems for adults.

However, BMI is not a diagnostic tool.

For example, a person may have a high BMI. To determine if excess weight is a health risk, a healthcare provider would need to perform further assessments.

These assessments might include skinfold thickness measurements, evaluations of diet, physical activity, family history, and other appropriate health screenings.

It has been nothing but a struggle with my doctor since the beginning. First she told me it was because I went off my birth control (which i didn't go off it, i just stopped getting AF), then went off it because I thought I was PG. Then she told me to just wait it out. Six months later, no AF. She put me of Progesterone and told me to call her in 3-4 months if I didn't get AF. FINALLY diagnosed me with PCOS! Finally some answers... this site has been so informative. my dh doesn't quite understand what I'm going through yet, but I'm glad all you women do. TTC since this month, just being hopeful.

Good stuff. I wish the doctor's had this info as well. It would have helped me a lot if we could have figured this out sooner!!!

This is valuable info. I think the BMI has to serve as only a broad indicator. I know that I am "normal" but too high for me. I have seen a spike in symptoms as I gained an "acceptable" amount of weight, based on BMI, but not for me.

Question Thin Cyster told Met is not the answer - what gives?

I live in San Jose and have been seeing an endocrinologist for the last three months. DX was thin-set PCOS (acne, pearls, Free Testosterone - 98). Starting Clomid this month (prior cycles were 50 - 60 days after coming off BCP).

Endocrinologist told me that I would read about Met on-line for PCOS but that she was specifically not putting me on it because she believes it doesn't help thin PCOS patients.

Have other thin-PCOS girls had BFP w/o Met and just Clomid? Should I see another doctor? I am thinking of requesting the glucose test as I am the heaviest I have been but am still considered to have a good BMI (5'5" 135 lbs).

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.
