Points: 278.91 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 278.91 | hey, i am new to the site (just found it yesterday) and i feel for the first time in a long time like there is hope for me. i am 20 years old and was diagnosed with pcos when i was about 17. for the past five years i have watched my weight climb steadily. i did weight watchers with my sister for about 6 months. in that time she lost about 75 lbs while i lost 0. litereally, 0. since then i have done atkins, south beach, biggest loser, and weight watchers again. all with no results. i went to dr after dr for help and always heard the same thing, "if you don't eat the calories, you can't gain the weight." but i knew this was not the case with me. it was physically impossible for me to lose the weight. i was diagnosed with galbladder disease about 2 months ago, and for 2 months was restricted to a diet of fruit, fat free yogurt and bread, never eating more than 600 calories/day, and i have gained 6 lbs! i was perscribed metformin when i was first diagnosed, but it has always made me sick, so i have not taken it consistantly. however, i started taking it again about 2 weeks ago because it is important to me to beat pcos, and i know that this is best chance i have right now. i am feeling sick from it, although a little less as time goes by, and i have not seen any weight loss yet, but i am not giving up. i am so thankful to have found this site, where there are so many women who know what i am going through. for the first time i feel like i am not alone in this, and your testimonies have given me hope. thanks! |

the above thread is awesome with some great info with shared triumphs and despair as we battle this crappy disease and it so focused on diet and sharing helpful tips. As for metformin i am the same have yet to try half a pill and start upwards but the doc suggested this to help my body get used to it. At the moment my body is in rebellion mode and refuses to lose weight even when being fed properly - i know i am in fat burning mode (my breath is crap) but insulin resistance is another part of the process to beat and it takes time and determination to beat it. something that if we are not seeing results is hard to find let alone stomach. This site is fantastic it has been my inspiration and at the moment it is what keeps me being a good healthy eater for this condition rather than giving up all over again.
Good luck with your journey of weight loss |

My Mood: Points: 921.68 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 921.68 | A Little Bit of Inspiration I just wanted to give any one who needs it a little bit of encouragement. Back in September 2005, before I knew I had PCOS, I went on a hike here in the DC area. It has lots of rocks to scramble up and down on and some very difficult terrain. It also has wonderful views of the Potomac. It took over 3 hours for me to complete the trail, and I was exhausted beyond belief. I was between 200-210 lbs. in the "before" picture. Trouble had already started for me, but it would be another year before I was diagnosed.
Well, I did the same trail today in less than 2 hours, and though I'm a bit sore, my sunburn will probably hurt more. It may not look it, but I'm 145 now. I'd like to lose another 10 and call the mission accomplished, but even my RE says, "you're finished."
I actually worked out and ate well for about 10 years prior to the 2005 pic. In my mid-20s my weight began to increase, my face turned red, hair started popping up on my face, chest (ew!). I just NEVER lost weight. I only gained, no matter what I did. I also had high blood pressure. I've had it since I was 9 years old.
In 2004 I was placed on blood pressure medication, but by the time the 2005 pic was taken, I think I was on my third drug combo. Nothing worked. Also, by 2005 my cycles had been irregular, painless, and without PMS for probably 8 years. I did get pain mid-cycle. I had numerous sonograms a year with cysts showing up every time. Little did I know I probably hadn't been ovulating regularly for that long.
Well, almost three years on. I'm still not regular, but the weight is off for the most part. My unwanted hair has softened or vanished all together. I still have rosacea (Argh!). My blood pressure is consistently NORMAL for the first time in my life. I monitor my calorie intake through thedailyplate.com, and up until recently I was on a 1500 calorie/day diet. I still remain within 2000 calories. I still work out daily at least 30 minutes per day, but I'm not as much of a control freak about calorie intake as I was even 6 months ago.
I can honestly say I'm a success story. PCOS diagnosis and treatment didn't just change my life, it redefined it.

[Can't say I look "good" in either picture, but scrambling up and down boulders will do that to a girl.] :-)

My Mood: Points: 216.32 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 216.32 | I just love this site. It is so nice to know that I am not alone in this fight. For years I didn't know what was wrong with me and now I know it's PCOS. For the first time in 9 years I have been able to loose weight. I went off BC about 10 months ago. I have been taking Metformin 1000mg/day (just bumped it up to 1500mg/day) for about 9 months and have lost a total of 33 lbs. At first I don't think I noticed loosing much weight and I felt like crap. I seriously was about to give up on Metformin, as well. I perservered and started eating better and working out. I would have to say that Metformin was my greatest discovery. I was 176 lbs prior and am currently 143. It feels really good. I am 10 lbs from my goal so I would definitely recommend Metformin to jump start your weight loss. Of course, exercise and diet are also very important to success.

My Mood: Points: 713.40 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 713.40 | Metformin made me really sick at first but you just have to keep going. The OB said I would start dropping weight...starting at 265, 3 months later I was only 255...10 lbs isn't dropping but it did get me started. I then made the decision to get together with some friends who wanted to lose weight for whatever reasons and went on a Biggest Loser/Weight Watchers kick and I have lost an additional 26 lbs since late Jan.
Having a close support group with friends weighing in every week has really helped me. We get together and all take turns making a healthy lunch and cheer each other on. It's hard at times but being accountable to those friends helps a lot.
I just calculate how many points Im eating by the calories, fat and fiber. I don't pay a thing.
