Hi im 19years old and after 3years of very irregular/non existent periods and server belly pains I've had an ultra sound and my Dr has diagnosed me with PCOS.
Ive looked it up online, i know what it is but where im so young and i don't know anyone else who has it, i was wondering if anyone could help me out. I understand what it involves and i no that it could result in myself not being able to have children naturally or at all.
I don't really know what to do with myself at the moment.
Hi Im new to this site, Im 19 and have not long been diagnosed with PCOS as well. Looking it up online makes it seem a lot worse than it is ! It freaked me out at first, but its as bad as it first seems. have you been put on medication ?
x
Hiya thanks so much for replying, yeah Ive looked it up but still reading it doesn't seem to sink in. The doctor doesn't seam to care really she has given me a new pill and that's all? She told me not to worry as im young and not currently trying for children? How about you? x
Hey thanks for replying and yeah Ive looked it up but its still not sinking in. My doctor has only changed my pill she told me not to worry about it all as im not currently trying for children. What about you? xx
There is a special teen thread on here - you may want to check that out, because you'll meet a lot of individuals your age! I was diagnosed around 19, and although it sucks you have PCOS, thank goodness you were diagnosed early. Some women go decades without understanding what's wrong. You, on the other hand, can work to combat this now! I suggest reading through the threads here that match your symptoms (facial hair, weight gain, etc.) to meet other people with those symptoms and get the support you need - it helps!
There's a lot still not understood about PCOS, but a lot that we're learning. Keep your diet in check and exercise regularly and you'll definitely help your situation.

I was diagnosed at 19 as well. My suggestion is to find a Physician that knows about PCOS and that will help you. It doesn't matter how old you are or if you want to have children there are other things that can happen if you don't know how to treat PCOS. Continue doing research and ask any questions you want. This is a GREAT site!!!!

I was diagnosed at 19, but that was 15 years ago and there wasn't any information available (barely an internet at that time). Every single women is effected differently, some have severe symptoms, others have mild. The number one thing you need to do is be active. Find an activity that you enjoy that gets your heart pumping and your lungs huffin' & puffn'. The number two thing you need to do is learn about nutrition and insulin resistance. IR is a contributing factor to all our problems, many of us get tested and show up as "normal" but have all the symptoms none the less and benefit from treating our bodies as if we were IR. These are the two things that are in your control at all times.
Remember that YOU are responsible for your body, not your Dr, they are just there as assistants to you so you can maintain good health. Some Dr's out there are absolutely horrible, and some are absolutely amazing! For some people it takes a long time to find the Dr that you click with, but it is so important. If you don't feel like you are respected or heard, find a new Dr. Also remember that they treat hundreds of patients and have to keep up on hundreds of different disorders, sometimes they just don't have enough time to keep up on everything. That means that you need to be on top of things and read research articles and know your stuff. Don't give your Dr more power than any other person... remember they are a person just like you or a mechanic or an administrative assistant, and they don't need to be up on a pedestal.
You are lucky to find out so soon in a time when there is lots of information out there! Educate yourself... at first it will all be really overwhelming and sound absolutely terrible but it can be managed. Give it time to sink in, this is a lot to take in! Be gentle with yourself.
How you choose to manage your symptoms depends on what they are and what your future plans are. This is not a death sentence, it is just an unfortunate obstacle in your life. You will be able to find peace with it eventually, give it time
Everyone on this board seems to be very compassionate and this is a good place to come for information and when you just don't feel understood. We are here for you cyster!
I'm 20 myself and was dx'ed with PCOS when I was 14.
It's easier said than done, but it really isn't worth it to panic about the whole children situation...Not everyone with PCOS has an awful time conceiving, or the same symptoms...etc.
If you feel like your doctor is being dismissive or doesn't have much experience with PCOS, definitely try to look for a new one. Regardless of whether you want children now or 20 years down the road, it doesn't hurt to get your body into working order.

hi! i'm 15 years old and have pcos. there are lots of great sites and books out there discussing pcos. there is a lot to know about it. but, to answer your question about having children, it really all depends. some people have problems, while others don't.
Hiya thanks so much for replying, yeah Ive looked it up but still reading it doesn't seem to sink in. The doctor doesn't seam to care really she has given me a new pill and that's all? She told me not to worry as im young and not currently trying for children? How about you? x
Yea pretty much the same thing I was told, I was put on dianette insted of the normal pill and thats pretty much it. It doesn't seem to affect me to badly, apart from weight I suddenly put on a load of weight and now Im finding its really hard to get rid of it which sucks when I have friends who eat loads more than me and don't know what a gym is ! However its a good reason try and keep as healthy as I can and go to the gym more. How about you ? All these other messages are so friendly everyone here is full of facts and useful info
x
Yeah its nice to be able to come somewhere and talk about it all! Ive been really busy im going back to cool in 3weeks and its costing me a fortune so havant really sat down and had real convos about whats going on with myself but im sure that its really gonna hit me when i do get that chance.
I agree that you need to see a new doctor about other options than just the pill. All bcp is going to do is cover up any symptoms and things will just be worse when you do want to have kids. I would at least ask for Metformin to be able to start on that therapy.
