I'm new here and have a "kind of" diagnosis of PCOS. My endo put
that I probably have PCOS on his notes. But here is the issue I have
with that...
I do not have ovarian cysts and my periods are fairly regular. I do
get terrible PMS though...and I've had high normal testosterone, low
SHBG, insulin resistance, acne, hair loss, weight gain, a LH/FSH
ratio of about 2:1 or so...and have had some spotting in the past. I was also diagnosed last year with hypothyroidism...and that one is for sure.
So my question is... Has anyone else here been diagnosed with PCOS and didn't have ovarian cysts or missed periods? Is that even possible?
I have just been recently diagnosed and havent had an ultrasound but had all of the clinical symptoms...large abdomen, obese, facial hair, irregular periods, high bp , i could go on lol. But yes it is possible to have pcos w/o cysts on your ovaries and its possible to have it with some, and not all of the other symptoms as well.

3/13/09- Dx w/ PCOS & IR
4/1/09- Provera 10mg for 5 days
4/3/09- Met 1000mg/day, Phentermine 37.5 mg/day
4/5/09- Stopped Phentermine, BP went thru the roof!
the name pcos is SO misleading because ovarian cysts is just one symptom in a long list. I have pcos but don't have ovarian cysts...my hormone levels alone prove that I have pcos. my symptoms include irregular periods, acne, migraines, overweight, and facial hair. the only time I feel somewhat "normal" is when I'm on bcp.
since pcos is something that effects us all differently, it's hard to compare one person to another...some have every single symptom while others only have a few, but yet we all have pcos.
Hi,
I also do not have cysts yet have been disagnosed with PCOS. However, I have very irregular periods... will go for months without one if off the pill. But with the out of whack LH:FSH ratio and missed periods, that's all my doctor said he needed to assume I fit somewhere along the spectrum of PCOS. PCOS, I've heard it described before, is basically a diagnosis of exclusion, meaning they can't find anything else that explains your symptoms so that's what you get... but just because they say you have PCOS doesn't mean your experience will be anything like the next girl's.
I always had regular periods and my first trip to a new gyno she asked if I had any problems and I couldn't think of any. However, I was 2 weeks late once and once only a few months before so I brought it up to her when talking about BC pills. She said since I had light acne and was 25, she wanted to just test my hormones. She did an ultrasound and I had no cysts.
So my period came as always, after 35 days, and I get my testing. I come back and she tells me I have PCOS, but on the low end of the spectrum.
As I have gotten older (I am 28 now), my periods have gotten more irregular. I am still a usual 35 days, but every 3 cycles or so I get a long 54 day one. I was on BC for over 3 years, so who knows how long this has been lasting. However, I ovulate on my own - just not sure when if I don't use a monitor or test everyday from CD 16-28.
I am not your typical cyster either - no cysts, no excessive hair growth, I am thin (however, when I do gain weight, it does go to my stomach which is a characteristic),or extremely irregular periods - I have 9-10 cycles a year. It was really by pure luck the doctor found out I was PCOS, but I am glad she did.
Remember that PCOS is a syndrome, not a disease - so basically doctors take a bunch of symptoms and come up with the conclusion of PCOS. THere isn't a "test" for it.

Women with PCOS doesn't experience all the symptoms associated with it, so its very possible to have PCOS and have a regular menstrual cycle and no cysts. I didn't start having irregular periods till about three years ago, but all my other symptoms started about three years before. So it is very possible you have PCOS.
