Peace Corps and Glucophage...really need help So I visit the 4th doctor in an attempt to determine do I have PCOS. The Dr. didn't even meet with me to follow up on the blood work, it was the physicians assistant and she was really unhelpful. She informed me my hormone levels were normal and I said so there's nothing wrong? And she was like do you want something to be wrong and then started to get ready to leave. When I pointed out I hadn't had a period in 5 months (which was in my chart) she then was like oh...decided to sit down and chat for awhile.
I find this so frustrating. The endocrinologist I went to I went specifically because she's supposed to be good with PCOS and diagnosing it. The PA informed while my hormone levels were normal my FSH: LH ratio or whatever said I did in fact have PCOS so she wanted to put me on glucophage. I explained to her that I'm leaving for the Peace Corps in March and will be somewhere in Africa for 2 years and 3 months and would I need to be monitored on glucophage because that would not be possible while in the Peace Corps. She said I could try it here and if everything was OK then it shouldn't be a problem.
I have a couple of concerns about this though. One I'm not insulin resistent and all those levels are normal. Additionally from what I've been reading you should have blood work done at least once and if possible twice a year which will be impossible for me. I also asked her about drinking with glucophage and she told me as long as I didn't drink in the morning when I took my pill that it wouldn't be a problem, however, from what I've read that doesn't really seem accurate either.
The whole experience was fairly negative because I felt like she was dismissing my concerns and hadn't bothered to read my chart because she wasn't aware I had irregular periods till I pointed it out to her.
Later that day I had to see a general practicioner for my Peace Corps physical and when I asked her about it she recommended against it because her point was why start treatment if you'll have to stop because she felt I shouldn't be on glucophage while being away from a doctor for so long.
Any suggestions, thoughts, ideas, or a recommendation for a really good doctor in Austin, Tx would be so much appreciated.
Really my biggest concern is getting rid of the hair, but I also have to consider the medication I'm taking and that I wont be able to really be monitored for two years. |
