Hi

welcome to sc. I know how horrible period pains are!! I usually take some pain killers (co-proxamol) and have a hot water bottle and a lie down - and a sleep.

Hope you feel better soon. All the best for your appointment next week, and don't forgetr to mention to your endo about the pain.

Eva

I got really bad period pains too, I take Feminax as often as I can and curl up with hot water bottle in bed if I can. If not, one of those heat pads that you can stick on your clothes. Light exercise can help, if you can face it, a quick walk around the block can make it better, most of the time I just want to stay in bed though. A nice hot bath can be good to relax your muscles.

I usually take ibuprofen and cry my eyes out Unless I have felt them coming for a few days before hnd, then I know to start taking the advil and it helps a lot, because usually it takes a couple of days to get them to go away. Definitely mention it to your dr, s/he could recommend whether or not you should be prescribed muscle relaxers.

I get really bad cramps 1 day prior to starting and the day off.The following days are l~o~v~e~l~y..I'm a pain freek I don't know if that's good or bad.I chose to take the pain. It's very uncomfortable, but I just deal with.My last manager even told me once if I didn't take some medication she was gonna send me home because she couldn't take seeing me in so much pain that can be avoided...I guess it's because I hate medicine. Not to downplay those of you who have some sense to take something to suppress the pain.I try to be as "natural" as possible. My friends and family tell me that my pain tolerance will truly be tested when I decide to have a baby and go thru labor. I said wellll, that might be a different story!!!!
Good luck and God bless you all~

Lightbulb Natural remedies for cramps

Hi Leanne and welcome!

Just quickly, here are a few remedies for menstrual cramps as suggested in Dr. Christiane Northrup's book, Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom:
  • stop dairy foods or switch to organic
  • cut down on refined carbohydrates
  • take essential fatty acids (fish oil, flaxseed oil)
  • take a multivitamin-mineral supplement
  • take a B complex with 100 mg of B6
  • 100 mg of magnesium every two hours during cycle
  • 50 mg of vitamin E 3x per day during cycle
  • ibuprofen before cramps begin (to interrupt release of prostaglandin F2 alpha)
  • acupuncture
  • black cohosh (also called cramp bark)
I used to have very bad cramping during my teen years, so bad that I'd get hot flashes and vomit. After giving birth, I had no cramping at all with periods.

Hope your pain subsides soon!!

From what I understand, aspirin and ibuprofen such as advil act as blood thinners, which could make your period heavier. Better to use something designed for period pain such as Naproxen Sodium (called Naprogesic here in Australia, not sure about other places) which will also have the reverse effect and lighten the period. Hot water bottles or heat packs can also be really soothing.
