Unhappy Periods - lack off!

Hiya everyone,

Just thought I would find out if anyone else has the same problem. I have an 18 month old (after 3 years of trying) and since he was born I have only had 2 periods - the last one was brought on by Primolut N. I am really frustrated because we wanted to start ttc #2 as soon as we could. My last period was in April and I stopped taking Met in July after a tummy bug and have felt ill ever since - not sure if that is relavent or not. GP has asked for blood test - I should get the results in a week.

Due to go back and see Infertility Consultant RE Periods next month. What should I be asking for - investigations? Drugs? I really don't know what to do.

Any advice?

Many Thanks
Take care
Nat

I conceived my second child when the first was 13 months old, and I hadn't had ANY periods in between! What a surprise!

How regular were your periods before you had your baby? Do you usually go so long without a period? ARe you breastfeeding? Even if you have stopped / never breast fed, your pro-lactin levels can stay high, and prevent periods.

My guess is you will need blood tests to check all your hormone levels.

Good luck

Hiya,
Thanks for the reply.

The longest I have been with out a period is 5 months. My periods have always been irregular apart from when I was on the Pill (95-97).

I only breast fed for 3 weeks.

So you got pregnant without having a period???

I have been told I don't ovulate so I am asuming I can't get pregnant again without treatment.

I had a blood test yesterday but not sure what it was for. Think it was just for Thyroid, Liver, Glucose Full blood count. Won't get the results for another week.

Anyway thanks again.

Yes, I had two pregnancies with no period in between. But I was breastfeeding which naturally suppresses ovulation / periods. As the baby breastfeeds less, eventually the Mum's prolaction levels should fall, and eventually she should ovulate...I must have fallen pregnant on that very first ovulation!

As I wasn't expecting a period, I didn't realise I was pregnant until a familiar "I'm gonna puke" feeling came over me, and even then I tried to convince myself it was due to being run down and having a chest infection. I was even congratulating myself on losing 6lb without even trying HAHAHA forgetting that exactly the same happened with my first pregnancy.

I did a HPT just in case and WOW I got a line! I was about 7 weeks pregnant by that time.

When my second baby was 13 months old my periods returned, and I ovulated for a few cycles before the PCOS reasserted itself and my periods got further apart, so really I was lucky to concieve baby number 2 so easily.

I had my baby son back in April and am now just waiting for a period to show. I'm not ready for no. 2 just yet but knowing how long it takes in the NHS to see a consultant I asked my doctor if I could be referred now to a consultant to get Metformin. He replied that I should be ttc for a while before he would refer me for Metformin. This makes me mad as before I conceived my son I never had periods unless they were bought on by medication so sending me home to ttc seems pointless.

Clomid didn't work for me but if you are already taking Metformin it seems to obvious one to try.

Good luck.

Sam

Hiya Sam, The waiting time here (Essex) is about 6 months. Before my son was born I had an appointment booked with the consultant for May - my son was born in Feb. I thought that would be enough time to get my periods settled but the hospital cancelled it because I was pregnant. I had to wait 6 months! I know I have got my long awaited baby but PCOS isn't just about Infertility - although it is a mayjor factor - I want to have normal periods - whatever normal is! My consultant didn't want to see me unless I wanted to TTC#2 - which in an ideal world I would like to have said "when JJ is 3 we will start ttc again" - but like a lot of people we can't do that. We are not ttc at the moment because I am not bleeding so there is no point. If it happens I will be over the moon but if it doesn't then I will have to seek help.
I have got 2 months supply of Clomid left and I am in 2 minds wether I should take them when I next bleed without my consultant knowing. I haven't taken my Met since July but I will start them again in Sep.
Anyway I have babbled on enough. Congratulations on the birth of your son. Good luck with your consultant.
Take care
Nat

Hi Nat,

I feel as though we are in a very similar situation. Although we are not ready for no. 2 quite yet, I feel as though we have to start going for the long route for treatment already. So my fertility, or lack of it, and the stress that brings is already foremost in my mind despite only having had my baby four months ago. I thought it would be much easier second time round but now I don't think so.

Like you I have some left over clomid and met but I am not sure I am brave enough to go ahead without "permission".
