Anyone out there pg and taking insulin? I don't really know what to expect. I have always been on oral meds before so this is a whole new world for me. Right now I am taking Humulin (pen) only at night and right now I am on 14units. Any advice would be appreciated!!
TIA,
Sherry

I am on Lantus 20 units, I stared out with 3 units at 6 weeks , I dee my endo at least 1 a month, sometimes 3 times. It sucks, but it gets better. I am now almost 21 weeks and everything seems to be fine.

i had to take insulin the later part of my pregnancy and the worst thing about it was taking the insulin and forgetting to eat 30 minutes later...i'd get all loopy...almost fell down once and that's not good when you're 9mos pregnant.
if i remember right, iwas on 20units NPH and 16 units R in the morning and then 18 units of regular in the evening. my 11 yr old daughter used to love to shoot me up..we made it a family thing...LOL
good luck

Hi there, I was on metformin until I had my confirmation of pregnancy and was taken off that and put on insulin instead.
Im on humalog and Lantus
I started off on Lantus at dinnertimes on 10units but since then I went up to 12units and now Im on 14units
Humalog was then introduced in the morning and evening as my levels were running high and was started on 4units am and pm but they have upped it to 5units on the evening one as Im still pretty high in the mornings (prolly due to night time munchies!)
Again Id say its not so bad, its still early for me as well, just another added annoyance which I scowl at and moan about but keep telling myself it will be worth it if all works out with the baby

I did insulin injections during my last pregnancy only. I think I was up to 5 a day by the time I had my daughter! Definitely the most important thing for me was to eat at the time I took the regular! Be encouraged that my pregnancy (and many others) turned out great; Cora was born at 37 weeks, weighed 7 lbs 4 oz, and had no blood sugar problems at all. Sometimes it's hard to remember, but it will all be wonderfully worth it in that first instant you see your baby!

I was on insulin for GD and was up to approx. 10 units per meal! I used the Humalin and Humalog pens. Insulin does not pass thru the placenta, so it really is the safest method of controlling blood sugar while pregnant. My baby was delivered by induction one week early (Nov '04) and was only 7 lbs 7 oz and had no blood sugar problems of her own. I certainly chalk it up to careful blood sugar management.
