Question Pg UK cysters did you get betas done??

I am 12dpo and just got a faint +ve HPT (Woo Hoo!!!). However, I do not feel in the slightest bit pregnant and am very suspicious of this test (even though 2 showed the same). I think it is just cos I have been TTC for 14 months and can't quite believe this could finally be it. Now all these USA girls are always going on about their beta results confirming pg. Do these get done in the UK? And when do I need to tell my GP about pg?

Extremely grateful for your thoughts and opinions

LOL

congratulations!!

I took an HPT the day before I had a Gynae appointment (just to PROVE I wasn't pregnant!!) and got a faint positive. When I saw him the next day he said even the faintest line meant I WAS pregnant, and he sent me off for a scan, which confirmed that there was a little implanted sac in there!

I never had any betas done, and I suspect I only got the scan as I was seeing the Gynae privately. I would say on NHS you have NO chance!

well i am in the UK and i am currently waiting for my beta results to tell me if i am pg or not .... i am lucky though as my doc puts them through for me if i request them ...and this is my GP !
He told me that they arnt supposed to do blood tests for pregnancy anymore unless an eptopic is suspected and that is what he usualy writes on the form to go with the blood to be sent off ...however this time i saw the other doctor in the surgery and i told him that my doctor normally puts them through for me as HPT's arnt that relyable with pcos ( ok so i fibbed a little) and he believed me and promptly took some blood but he wrote pcos pg query on the script ....so i guess what im trying to tell you is that all docs are different .

If you go to your doctor and explain that having pcos you have an increased risk of M/c and you would like to have your hcg levels tested to make sure everything is ok and progressing like it should be ...and also ask for a prog test too and explain that you would like this done so that you know wether you will need prog support ...tell him that you have waited and tried long enough for a baby that now you are pg that you want to do everything possible to help keep it .... im sure if you explain all of this he will draw some blood for testing ...ohh and try catching him either first thing in the morning or last thing at night <<<< strang i know but these are the best times of the day to catch a doc at his most considerate of moments

hope i have helped you out a little

love an kisses jo x x x x x x x x x

Ps please let us know your result if you manage to convince them to let you have it done !

I didn't even know what beta's where until I read some of the US cysters posts. I think Jo's advice is most excellent and I wish I had been more pushy with my GP in the early months (I'm currently 27 weeks!). Because this is my first preg with no history of M/C I haven't been given any special treatment at all - in fact so far I've only had one proper ante natel appointment (apart from the 2 usual scans) which was my booking in appointment at 16 weeks.

Sometimes I feel a bit jealous about the amount of medical assistance the US cysters seem to get - I haven't even heard the baby's heartbeat yet - but I guess it's impossible to compare the two health systems as ours is free and theirs isn't.

Good luck with your results - I hope it's good news!

Default Thanks!

Thanks Guys

It is really good to get the opinion of fellow UK gals who are not used to the very intensive US medical system.

Jojo - thanks for your cunning advice for getting around the system. I do think we should be treated as special cases cos we are higher risk and especially if we have tried so hard to conceive. I have made an appointment with my GP for Monday and hope I can persuade her to do a beta and possibly an early U/S. Good luck with your test result and let us know how you get on!

Juju - congrats on your pg. Sounds like you are getting on great despite the NHS's relative lack of interest in your pregnancy! Were you on met to conceive and if so, did you continue it through pg?

Hunterli - I like your 'just to prove I'm not pregnant' story! How far along are you now?

Lol

BritCyster - I wasn't on Met to concieve but we hadn't used any form of contraceptive for nearly two years so I figured getting pregnant was not really an option. The Endocrinologist did warn me when he perscribed the Met that it might make me fertile and I guess I didn't believe him! I was only taking the Met for just over a month when I fell pregnant and after much deliberation decided to stay on it for the whole of the first trimester even thought the Endo didn't want me to. I figured that the Met obviously had such a huge effect on me (I also lost a stone and a half on it even thought I was pregnant for much of the time!) that I didn't want to risk coming off it during the tentative first 12 weeks.

Hope to see your on the preg board!?

Julia

BritCyster .. ready for a laugh??

My "just to prove I'm not pregnant" story was a while ago ... that baby will be 6 years old in a few weeks, and she has a sister who is 4.

Hunterli - I guess I got my wires crossed! I hope I will be in the same position as you, family wise, in a few years time

Juju - thanks for your met story - that met sure is powerful stuff! I am currently wondering what to do about the met. My RE wants me to stop it and I think I may just try a strict diet instead.

Thanks again girls

Hello Brit Cyster

Are you the cyster who is a radiologist? If I've remembered right (it stuck in my memory as DH is too) couldn't you get one of your female colleagues to do an u/s. I had ohss so had lots of really early scans to make sure I didn't have an ectopic and you could see the gestational sac on the tv u/s that I had at 5 wks pg (22dpo to be exact).

Best wishes
Amanda C
