Question Physical Coming up--Any new good meds for PCOS?

Hey everyone, I'm kinda new to the board but not new to PCOS, which officially I have only been diagnosed with in 2002, but figured it out loooooong before then.

Anyways, I'm approaching my annual physical and have some things I want addressed with my doc, who is very good at listening to me about PCOS symptoms and treatments.

Right now, I am on Metformin XR 1000 mg. per day, plus prenatal vitamins, because Hubby and I were trying to conceive. Things have changed somewhat and here lies my problem.

I have also been diagnosed with a herniated disc in my lumbar area (L4/L5) and physical therapy didn't work, injections didn't work, so I'm most likely looking at surgery, which I was told I am a good candidate for due to the way the herniated disc is. After a long and depressing time thinking about it, I decided that we will not keep trying to have a baby right now, and to possibly go on birth control to see if it will help my PCOS symptoms and also give me time to heal if I do have the back surgery. I figure, it may help to go on the pill for like a year or so and see if I can #1 get my back fixed #2 see if the horomones will get back to normal #3 be able to go on Spiro and get rid of the hair, which to me is THE worst symptom for me, both physically and emotionally. Trying to conceive and feeling like a man is NOT good for my psyche.

ANyways, I was wondering what types of medications would be good for me to look at? I was just recently switched to the Met XR after asking my doctor about it and he agreed to let me try it, or go to Advandia if it didn't. I know I can't take high dose BCP, cause of how I have reacted to the Patch (excessive bleeding--2 straight weeks), and Ortho Tri-Cyclin (massive hospitalizeable migraines). I did alright on Lo-Estrin but was wondering if there were any other meds that people have tried that had good results.

Sorry this note was so long, I guess I just keep talking and talking.... ya get the drift...Thanks Cysters!

Exclamation Low Dose BCP list/has anyone used these?

I am wary of trying anything other than the low dose pills, especially after my experience with the Patch. Never again, that was horrible and scary and I was convinced I would need a transfusion or something!

Anyways, I've been doing some research online about birth control pills and there's a bunch of low dose out there, I'm wondering if anyone may have experience with these (which are all low dose combination pills):

  • Alessa/Lutera
  • Aviane
  • Levlite/Lessina
  • Micrette/Kariva
  • Lo Ovral/Low Ogestrel
  • Nordette/Levora
  • Ortho-Cept/Reclipsen
  • Cyclessa/Velivet-------->lol, makes me think of Velvet
  • Yasmin

Anyways, I figured I'd give it a shot and see how anyone did on these, or atleast give a list of the low dose pills, which took me over an hour to find out all the info on them I'm one of those get on the net and research whenever I hear something new. I've got all of them in a file with Manufacturer, brand name, generic and whether its covered under my insurance and how much it costs. Yeah, i need a life!!! hehe, these smilies are cool...

Anyways, I gotta go check on hubby (been sick since yesterday--possibly appendicitis) and then get ready for work. WIsh me luck and hope someone out there has had some luck with these meds.
