I go to Curves and then at home do a Denise Austin video that uses a resistance band.
I really like Denise's Get Fit Fast and Personal Trainer dvd's. Both have short, 10-minute strength training segments. On PT, you can MUTE Denise and just workout with music.

Kat, I just wanted to say thanks. When you first posted this thread back in February, it got me motivated to start weight training. I'd already been dieting and doing some cardio but had hit a brick wall. The weight training really turned things around. I'm still going strong and I can't believe how great I feel or how much of an impact it has made in helping me control my PCOS symptoms.
Also take a look at this article. It's not about strength training, but about the positive effects of lifestyle intervention - EVEN WHEN WEIGHT LOSS DOESN"T TAKE PLACE: http://www.insidepcos.com/articles/6...-Syndrome.html
Quote:
We conclude that lifestyle modification without rapid weight loss leads to a reduction of central fat and improved insulin sensitivity, which restores ovulation in overweight infertile women with PCOS. Lifestyle modification is the best initial management for obese women seeking to improve their reproductive function.

Wow, I was just getting ready to post a question about strength training, as I have decided that I have to add it to my exercise routine (water aerobics two times per week-I LOVE IT but I know it's not enough).
I have never done strength training, so I don't know where to start. For the videos mentioned, do I need any equipment? Or is it better to go to a gym and use their equipment when starting out? My youngest is starting Kindergarten this month, so I will have more time to focus on exercise.
Thanks for bumping this thread! There is always such great info on this board!

That's where I started. Then I needed more of a workout, so I joined Bally's and that's been GREAT for me in continuing my cardio and resistance training.

Weight Loss Started: 11/14/08 SW: 232 / CW: 232 / GW: 160 Total Loss: 0 pounds
I've been trying to fit in 30-45 mins of weight training 2-3 times per week, but I've been crunched for time lately, so I've been choosing the aerobic stuff over the weights. I take a few classes at the gym and in a couple of them, we use light (3-5 lb) weights for atleast part of the class, such as when we're doing step aerobics. Does this count as weight training?
Thanks!
- Jess

As a physical activity session - yes. As a strength session - Sort of...barely
When I'm time crunched, I do 20 minutes of "more intense than usual" cardio, and spend the rest of the time doing strength training for the lower body (those are bigger muscles and burn more calories.)
Classes and videos with a mix of cardio and weights 'can' be good, as long as the strength portion REAAAAAALY works the muscles. I've only found a handful of videos that do this well. I prefer to split things up, so I get a GOOD cardio session and a GOOD strength session.

If you're new to strength training, best to have a session, or two with a trainer, or a small group class.
Seek out a gym with a free 2-week trial, and do your sessions during the trial. If you're really good at learning proper form, you can get a great strength workout at home with small free weights. Until then, best to workout on machines, at the gym. It helps to find a gym you like. I hate most gyms, but there are a few that I just LOVE. Unfortunately, they aren't in the state I live in

Oh my gosh!!!!Thank you...thank you..thank you!!!....I have been doing great on my cardio and my IR diet but have been avoiding strength training like nobody's business because of my former nutritionist's advice...He said that someone that is overweight or obese should NEVER do strength training because they will bulk up. And that I was not losing weight fast enough because I was doing all this strength training with my cardio....I was told to stop the strength training right away and just do cardio...Which is what I have been doing ever since because I didn't want to do anything to ruin my progress or become more bulky.
How can a nutritionist be so wrong?

Seriously, whenever anyone offers what sounds like definitive advice like that, ask to see some research on it. Be nice, and just say you want to understand the science behind what they're suggesting.
Frequently, you'll find studies that have seemingly opposite results, but that can often times be explained away by looking at the methodology.
I doubt that nutritionist could produce even ONE credible study which concluded that people trying to lose weight should avoid strength training.

One more note on the will-I-bulk-up question: FTM transpeople (people changing their sex from female to male) gain bulk and MTF transpeople (changing from male to female) LOSE bulk following the line of their testosterone levels. If you have high testosterone you may bulk up a bit, but unlike things like hirsutism, bulk is reversable, and will shift as Kat says. Not only that, but the bulk is less dramatic than other effects of T unless you're actually in transition.
Short form: it's safe, go ahead and exercise! :-)
