Default Which pill the best for women with PCOS?

Hi everyone. I used to post here ages ago when I was trying to conceive my kids. Through various methods I had my 3 children and now I need advice about birth control for fertility reasons and other reasons. My youngest is 18 months and we are 100% done having children. Neither of us really feel comfortable with sterilization (possible health problems) so we need another way of avoiding pregnancy. I am 1500 mg of Metformin for insulin resistance and I seem to be ovulating at least a few times a year. I also have very bad acne and I am hoping to find a pill that will clear that up.

So, which pill has the least side effects? I am mostly worried about weight gain as I am already 35-40 lbs overweight. Which pill will help with the acne and facial hair? And which is best overall for preventing pregnancy? Thanks for any help you can give me!

Hi,

I understand how hard it is to find the right pill to minimise effects and make you feel "normal" again..

I've tried Dianette (Diane) which made me very depressed and very fat.

Yasmin seems to be recommended a lot because it is a recently manufactured pill, but i found it very bad. All of my symptoms were far worse, and i was in so much pain the specialists thought i had endometriosis as well! But then I went back to Marvelon (Desogen in US), which made me feel fabulous again! (Well, i had no more pain and my skin cleared up, plus i lost some weight - which i put on during my 6/7 months on yasmin).

I'm not saying it's been plain sailing, and yes, i do have bad cycles sometimes, but i would be careful when trying newer pills, because sometimes the new hormones aren't so good for some people.

Good luck, and don't be afraid to ask lots of questions when you see your doc/specialist!

xx

I have taken both desogen and yasmin and both seemed the same for me.

I've taken Yasmin but recently switched back to Estrostrep Fe. I switched because I was having a lot of breakthrough bleeding between cycles. Originally I was on Estrostrep Fe and doing good but was switched to Yasmin when it came out because it was derived from Spironolactone (another med I was on).

Your best bet would be to talk to your doctor and figure out what exactly would work best for you (lose dose, higher dose, shot, etc) and what exactly you're looking for.

I am currently pregnant, but have take a ton of BCP in the past. The most recent one I used was Ovcon 35 and it was THE BEST one for clearing up my acne. It didn't cause weight gain that I could tell... When I am done having this baby, I will definitely go back on it.

I had a horrible time on Yasmin. My face broke out worse than ever, I had terrible mood swings, and I spotted and bled off and on all the time. I felt like I was constantly bloated.

I have been on Ortho Tri-Cyclen LO for about a year and have had no side effects. I was afraid I would gain weight, because I have heard that some women gain on BCP's, but I haven't. I have had no breakthrough bleeding, and my periods have been light and short.

I didn't specifically go on BCP's for PCOS. I have endometriosis and went on them to control my symptoms and painful periods. However, if you are going to give BCP's a try I would recommend it!

I went to the clinic today and decided to try Yasmin. Today is the first day of my period so I am starting today. It is a walk in doctor's office - I don't have a family doctor because there aren't any available in my city - and the doctor gave me 4 months free!

Has anyone been on Ortho-Tri? I was but it seems "weak". I would take the pill at the same time everyday but when it was time to start my period again it never came....it was very wierd. I did not have one for months until i went to the doctor who prscribed me meds. to induce my period again.

I am going to the doc. soon and am thinking about switching.

I've only been on Depo Provera in the past and I believe that is what caused my PCOS and IR to come out full-form. This is my first BCP (I am on Yaz) and some of the side effects are driving me batty. I just found out I am anemic too, on top of everything else, it caused me to have an almost 3 week long period, and one week of that was a VERY heavy flow.

I am on BCPs mainly for the PCOS but also to get my hormones in check. So far I'm hating it, but I've only been on it for almost 2 months now, so I have to give it another month before we decide what to do next.

Its my understanding that its an individual choice between u & ur doc.

I've been on a few different one ending at Estelle (Diane) which at the time was meant to be THE pill 4 PCOS but in light of its risks etc its no longer deemed any different to any other BCP.

Demulen made me gain weight but regulated my cycle. Alesse was awesome ecause I didn't fee as bloated and my periods were very light. Eventually my periods were non existant and I went on Diane 35. It has been helping with my slight Acne but I feel bloated again.
Hope I helped!
