I have been dx with pcos about a month ago but i have had pitting edema for about five years now. It started in one foot but now both legs and hand and maybe even my tongue.. Has anyone had this and gotten better with treatment such as metformin? It can be painful and all my shoes are stretched to the max..... any advise?
Are you taking any other medications? I had a friend who was taking Lyrica and this was a side effect of the meds. Also, if you have uncontrolled high blood pressure this could cause it too. In any case, pitting edema is usually a signal that something is wrong and not just a side effect of being overweight. I would seek that advise of a different doctor if he won't do anything about it.

I agree with Fairy - you need a second opinion. I HATE IT!!! when doctors just write off any medical problem as "oh, that's just cuz you're fat".. BS! Find someone who will listen and ask them to test your kidney function, making sure you're not spilling proteins (another sign of kidney failure), or any other tests for things that could cause this.
Hi there, a pitting Oedema is different from a general Oedema. If you press the swelling for a few minutes and it stays in then its pitting. Generally this is due to your lumphatic system no longer able to return your excess body fluid back into the lymphatic system.
I would highly recommend (since it has progressed) checking your kidneys, diabetes and possible heart (should just check Blood Pressure at first then your Dr can go from there.
To help it you can wear compression stockings, place your feet up for several hours a day (or lie down, maybe when watching telly etc), also if you can afford it lymphatic massage (but dont get this if you have varicose veins). Also due to the swelling your skin might be dry, and frail? Try to use a good basic moisturizer on your ankles etc to keep your skin supple.
I hope this helps :O)
