I was dxed with PCOS in 1998 without any of the "classic" blood work markers for PCOS, nor did I have cysts on my ovaries. I was dxed based on the fact that my mestrual cycle had stopped at age 12 suddenly, and never returned, the fact that I had bad acne, and I was overweight, especially around my mid-section. So I settled in with that diagnosis and continued to see my Endo for periodic blood tests. My cholesterol also continued to get horrible(320) and my H1C levels were getting worse over the years. In 2004 all of a sudden, my prolactin levels rose to 39, which is abnormal. My Endo told me to come back in 6 mos to see if they were still elevated, and they were. She sent me for an MRI, and on Friday, the 13th of August(great day) I got a phone call saying they found something growing near my brain. It turned out to be a large pit. tumor that had been growing for approximately 12 years and was basically behind these syptoms.
You really can't tell the difference between a pit. tumor and PCOS or anything else for that matter. There are many types of pit. tumors that result in many of the same symptoms. Fortunately, pit tumors are rare, and more likely it's PCOS behind the problems, but unfortunately, if you have a pit. tumor and not PCOS, you may wind up being dxed with PCOS like me because pit. diseases are overlooked and not normally expected in patients.
Feel free to pm me if you have more questions, but I'd discuss this concern with your doctor, and so he or she can tell you why he or she suspects PCOS and not something else. Also, this is why it's so crucial to get blood work drawn periodically, because I was so tempted to say the hell with doctors right before I was dxed with the tumor because I was just so confused and annoyed with everything, but for some reason, I went back in to get checked out and get my blood work done, and low and behold it was a REALLY good thing I did.
Right now, I am still on Metformin because the tumor kind of messed up my metabolism and insulin sensitivity, but my menstrual cycle is pretty normal right now, although it's pretty sensitive and gets thrown off track pretty easily. I still break out if I don't take my prescription meds for acne, but I think it just might be a genetic issue and not caused by something else. My cholesterol dropped from 320 to like 190 in a really short period of time so I was pretty happy. Bottom line, keep seeing your doctor, and keep getting those blood tests!
