I don't have Diabetes (yet) but my Mom does and has already started amputations on her lil feet. So I need to watch out!
Ok I have taken myself off Metformin for a minute becasue of the way it makes me feel. So I decided to check my blood sugar after being OFF the Met and I wanted to know what's norm? AND what times should I be taking the blood test I know of first thing in the morning, but when should I do it again yesterday I did it first thing in the moring, then ate, took it an hour later, and then before lunch, after lunch what should the numbers be reading? Can anyone help me????

Both of my parents are diabetic as well, I am not yet either, but I am sure I am on my way, especially if I don't get my act together! Anyhow, I think my parents take their readings fasting when they first wake up, and then 2 hours after each meal and once before bed. I don't think that you need to test that often though if you are not already diabetic and having major issues w/sugar levels. I think that doing it in the morning (fasting when you first wake up) and then maybe another time during the day 2 hours after a meal would be good for you, after a little time you will see where you are at. Also, there is a test you could ask your doc to do (I think it's called A1c or something like that. Which is a blood test that they take that shows an overall average of what your blood sugar/glucose levels are for a period of about 3 months. You get a different score than what you would get on your glucose monitor but they'd explain that to you and tell you what the score was to get a "daily average" or whatever. Just a thought, I don't know if they will do that unless you are already dx'd as diabetic or not though. Anyhow, I'm no expert that's for sure, but I hope this has helped somewhat! Good luck...hopefully we can get our stuff under control before we end up like our parents!

I think it's important to do something to prevent becoming diabetic if you can. I'm diabetic now. I couldn't handle taking met either, but I didn't have any trouble at all taking Avandia and it helped me out a lot. Low carb dieting helps me more than anything. When I'm on my diet I don't have to take any meds at all.
At 7:30am my level was 147
At 8:30am my level was 206
At 2:30pm after lunch it was 111
At 8:30 after dinner it was 157
This morning before breakfast is was 159
At 9:30am after breakfast is was 146
Are these pretty normal?!?!?!?!?

Chula,
I am thinking that these are high readings. I was wondering why you went off of the glucophage? How was it making you feel?? I had some tummy issues on it when I first started, now I can eat anything and I rarely have any episodes.
Good luck to you on whatever you decide to do. Also if the glucophage wasn't working for you maybe your doctor would prescribe something else. We all have to find our own answers.

Counting the days until my husband comes home from Afghanistan, December 4th at 8:33pm, but hey who's counting?!
Well the reason I went off was because I was feeling extremely tired! I thought it was due to the Metformin. But I am finding now that I am still tired!! Maybe it's just this weight I have no energy I am getting it in my head that I need to "make" myself get out there and walk if only 1/2 mile but do it!!!!!!!! I am going back on the Metformin after thinking about it ALL morning long. I thought they were decent numbers considering I don't have Diabetes yet. *shrugs shoulders* I am back on the Metformn tomorrow.
I never had tummy problems my problem with Met was the tummy bloatation and feeling tired but I have been off it for 6 dyas and I am still tired I think it's a lack of exercise I sit all day and then I am too tired to get up and cook in the evening this is so sad!!!!!!

I'm assuming these are all 2 hrs after eating? If so, the lunch was decent. The rest are highs. You want less than 140 after eating. 100 or less when you wake up and have been fasting all night while sleeping.
Eat regular (every 4 hrs ish) meals, about 500 calories per meal. This helps keep blood sugar stable. Frequent, small meals rather than infrequent (possible drop in blood sugar) and/or huge ones (possible spike in blood sugar).
Please take you meds and don't change them around without your doctor's knowledge. That kind of worries me.
I think you are right about it being the tiredness from being sedentary and then being overweight. I felt that way when I first started and rightly so -- I was obese and every step I took was burdened by the extra weight. Didn't exactly make me EAGER to be running around!
Consider swimming or water aerobics as your first exercise. The water keeps you cool, you don't notice sweat as much, and it helps cushion your joints and supports some of the weight. Then when you are a bit fitter and more comfortable doing exercise, you can do it on land -- walking, aerobics, bike, tennis, whatever.
I did that and it helped get me past that initial "getting started" hurdle.
Another tip for making exercise more comfortable -- get some Body Glide. Rub it anywhere you are prone to chafe -- inner thighs, around bra straps, back of heels, etc.
Also invest in wicking workout wear rather than cotton -- Target and Walmart has them reasonably cheap. Helps with the sweat unpleasantness.
Thanks astrophe that was alot of useful info!! I have no problem with the walking part I can do it it's just getting out there and doing it! I have to put my mind to it is all!!! AND I will! Thanks ladies!

They are high. I think it is pretty safe to say, based on those numbers, that you are diabetic now. There are other medications besides met to treat this. I've used several different ones. Talk to your doctor about alternatives that might be easier on your system.
