There are 3 ways to test for Hcg, the pregnancy hormone. You can pee in a cup or on a stick, and you either get a positive or negative result - you either have Hcg present in your urine or you don't.
Or you can have a blood test. One type of blood test (I can't remember what it's called) also just gives a positive or negative result. The beta is the other blood test and it gives a specific level of Hcg. This can help to date a pregnancy (although it's not the most reliable method), and taking at least 2 of these 2 days apart gives some indication of the health of the pregnancy, as the levels should approximately double every 2-3 days in early pregnancy.
Hope this helps!
