Exclamation Please give advice for 1st doctor visit

Hi everyone,

I was diagnosed by lab tests in February of this year...my Doctor wanted to see me again in May if I still hadn't gotten AF (last one was very light in February), which I still have not. I want to ask about what the best meds and procedures are for me. I am relatively thin, (5'2, 110 lbs) have minimal excess hair, but have continuous on and off pms symptoms (headaches, cramps, mood swings-depression). I have not had an ultrasound yet either and hope that my doctor will suggest this. I would like to go in prepared with what meds I think I should be on. ANy advice? metformin? Spiro? Birth control pills? I had been on bcp for 5 years because of excessively heavy periods but am worried about being able to get pregnant down the road. All of this seems very scary right now. Please help!

Thanks very much. Just wondering if it is better to start out with metformin or bcps to regulate ovulation. I think my gyn wants me to get back on bc, but I'd rather try to see if taking metformin will induce AF. Any opinions?

I would suggest staying away from the BCP. The tend to mask the symptoms of PCOS and may help to heal the ovaries a little, but it is so not worth the risks. BCP raise the risk of blood clots, which we (having PCOS) already have a higher risk of having. I can tell you from personal experience. I suffered from a PE (pulmonary embolism-blood clots in my lungs). There were many factors that all played a part..and one of those factors was BCP. I would stick with the metformin. Your ovaries will heal with that too. Make sure you get on a high enough dose (1500-2550mg per day). Good luck.

BCP's are not recommended for long term treatment of PCOS. IMO I think you would be better off with Met. Oh, and Welcome to SC!

Thank you so much everyone! I was afraid of the Bcp because I was on those for 5 years before... I don't think that's healthy. Feeling much better, I found a book called Alternative healthcare which includes aromatherapy, eastern medicine, etc. for our condition. I'm going to try those things as well.
