Hi ladies,
I am a 19 year old college student and am convinced i have PCOS. My problem is that i don't have insurance, so i cannot pay for a specialist. The college i attend, we have a wellness center, for free, and the wait to see an endocronologist throught that is 3-6 months. I cannot wait that long. I was wondering if anyone could tell me what tests i need to have done, so i can be diagnosed by the doctor here at school.
i have my thyrioid checked because they thought i had hypothyiroidism, but came back normal. Then i had my DHEA levels checked and my levels were 1,946, almost double the normal limit.
my symptoms..
-irregular period cycle
-facial hair, excessive, i have to pluck every day
-weight gain around my stomach, lovehandles, I gained over 20 pounds without any major changes in eating
-i cannot lose weight, no matter what i do, excercise, eat less, tried it all
-hairloss, i have lost a lot of hair by my forehead area, and i still do
-i have skin tags, on my neck, under my eye, under one of my breasts
-i have never been skinny even when i ate very little and excercised all the time i weighed 150 and it was my lowest
-now my weight is 172, i would love to be 150 again, that was ok with me
please help, i don't know what to do, i want to control this, as diabetes runs in my family, i'm sick of being fat, and i really want kids someday
by the way i go to school in Wooster, OH and live in Grosse Pointe, MI. If anyone knows a nice doctor who can help me but won't charge me a fortune, please let me know.

hello,
welcome and I am glad you found us. This is an awsome website for encouragment and understandment. I was dx with pcos and insulin resistant in octoberish I believe. I never heard of it until my doctor sent me to a obgyn. My problem was irregular periods. sometimes I would have one and then not for four months and then in end of july I started and didn't quit for 2 months that is when I was sent to the gyno. I never heard of it before she told me. My point is I am glad you have heard about pcos already. If you cannot afford much try talking to your doctor about putting you on a birth control like yasmin. It helps with regulation of periods and testosterone levels. Which would probably help with excess hair. I have alot of the same symptoms as you skin tags, losing hair having excess hair, weight gain ( you could be Insulin resistant), etc. That is where I would start. Sorry if I haven't helped much but if you need someone to talk to feel free to email me. My email is hakker@scccd.org
Take care cyster and hang in there!!
i have been on bcp before, and when i started Yasmin was initially when my problems worsened. I believe that i am insulin resistant, and bcp worsens insulin resistance. I had breakthrough bleeding on Yasmin, so they put me on Ovcon 35, but had horrible side effects, naseua, depression, and the last thing i was on was the nuvaring and i had a period for 3 weeks straight. So now i am not on bcp. I am desperately waiting to get diagnosed, well do the tests required to diagnose me, so i can be put on something to help with my insulin resistance, and bcp to help with ovulation.
The thing is i fit all the clinical symptoms of someone with PCOS and insulin resistance, the issue is having all the tests performed and an official diagnosis.
Go to the stickies in the Newbies board - there should be some listing of tests you could give a doctor to help them determine a DX.
A regular doctor could diagnose you, although make sure the doctor knows what pocs is - there are some who don't!
I don't know of any docs in Wooster - Akron/Canton is my area...

hay there, i'm fairly new on here too but before my diagnosis 4 years ago i had some tests done and all were through my gp (regular doctor)
he carried out blood tests and put me on a waiting list for a scan right away. what i did before going to the doctor was to read some articles on the internet before going along so i knew what i was talking about even if he didn't. with hindsight it might have been better had i printed some of those articles off and taken them with me as i may have been taken more seriously. i hope this has been helpful and i hope you get info from your doctor. good luck.
HI Welcome to SC. I am glad you found us. I wish there was something we could do. From what you have listed it sounds like to me you do have PCOS. Contact me if you wish.
