Default Please help!!!!

I had my thyroid tested in May at the same time I was diagnosed with PCOS and my TSH was around 6. I went to an endo he retested and it came back 2.9. My T4 and T3 were both normal both times. We are TTC and he said that since it came back normal the 2nd time we can proceed with TTC with no meds, but now I am reading that anything above a 2 can be considered abnormal. I started Metformin 3 months ago and have had only 1 af since then - I am wondering if I do have a problem with the thyroid and should actually be on meds for it. I am really scared because I know that hypothyroid can have long term affects on a baby if and when I get PG!!!!

Also, why would it fluctuate? my RE said that the thyroid does not usually flucuate like that.

I go back to my RE on Thursday and I am going to ask him what I should do

Does anyone know anything about what is a safe range and if it is normal for it to fluctuate???? Could it have been lab error???? Not sure what to do - I am really scared!

If they put me on meds do I need to hold off on TTC????

hi ..i have hypo too... imo it can fluctuate depending on time of day cycle etc etc...first things first i would telldr to recheck just for your sanity and make sure he does all the other thyroid tests too... the new range is something like .3 to 3.03.... so even the last one is top of range..... get the third test and lets go from there..but i think you are right to be concerned..... 2 is optimal generally but like i said above 3 is definate..so you are on the border anyways...

or you can just go by the last blood test..but i am a neurotic lol

print out the new guidelines for your doc too good luck xox jenn

TSH can fluctuate as much as 3 points in an average person, which is why it is so important to get Free T4 and Free T3 tests in addition to the TSH. Since your first test reading was high, I would ask your doc to run those other tests, as well as a TPO (antibodies) test. Hashimoto's Thyroiditis is the most common cause for thyroid problems, and is commonly found in women with PCOS. Often, the T4 and TSH tests come back normal, but the T3 may be low, and there may be antibodies present.

I had complete thyroid testing done several weeks ago, and my TSH and FT4 were normal, my FT3 was in low range, and I tested positive for the antibodies. I had to press to get the tests I wanted run, because many docs are resistant to running more than just the TSH and T4 (which is not the same as FT4).

Reverse T3 is really just a way to test Total T4. Free T3 and Free T4 show how much thyroid hormone your body is actually using, but the total T3 and total T4 only show how much thyroid hormone is available. You can have normal levels of both in your blood, but if your body isn't using it correctly then you may need treatment.

Thanks for all your responses. I am going to ask the RE tomorrow to run more tests. I have had the T3 and T4 tests and apparantely both came back normal.

I am really worried about this because I know if it is not taken care of it can affect the development of the fetus when I get pg.

What meds are you ladies on???
