Default Please help!! Continuous bleeding since 2 years!

hi all,

i am a 25 yr old virgin with regular periods until the age of 23. i have been bleeding continuously for 2 years now..sometimes mild and sometimes heavy. i am 5 ' 3" tall and increased weight from 120 to 140 pounds during these 2 yrs. i tried ayurvedic and homeopathic medicines for regulating my periods but in vain. i thought it was high time and consulted an obgyn and was diagnosed with PCOS after a pelvic ultrasound. i got all the blood tests done. according to the results, I have no thyroid problem, no diabetes, no cholesterol and i am not anemic too. i only have vitamin B12 deficiency and I think my progesterone is low. i don’t have other symptoms of PCOS like excessive hair growth and acne. the obgyn said i am not ovulating and a lot of eggs are getting wasted, which might lead to premature ovarian failure (that is, early menopause due to eggs getting exhausted). and to conserve the eggs, she prescribed the BCP Yaz. she asked me to try them for 2 months to see if they work for me and see her again. i am really concerned about using this pill after reading all the side effects Yaz has caused to so many people. the doctor said that the hormonal problems my body is undergoing right now r far more worse than what the pill could cause to me. i am really against using them and want to try natural ways to stop this bleeding and get back my real periods. i am getting married to my boyfriend soon and would like to STOP this bleeding!! any thoughts on this? please help me. i am really worried and don’t understand what to do.

thanks,
shruti

i've heard that vitex can work to regulate your hormones/periods? but 2 years is a long time. maybe you should just try the bcp for a few months, especially since you're getting married and you don't want to be bleeding during your wedding/honeymoon period.

Also, Vitex should make you ovulate. If you're wanting to postpone ovulation, I would opt for BCPs.

For me the pill has helped and has not really caused any problems - that is not true of everyone - but it might be worth it to learn a bit more about PCOS and the pros and cons of the pill before you make your mind up for good about not trying it- perhaps find a good book on PCOS - I think that "The Savvy Women's Guide to PCOS" might be a good choice.

If you have ethical issues related to using the pill, or if you are determained to go the natural route - you might want to read up on dealing with PCOS natuturally. A progesterone product might be a way to try to deal with the non-stop bleeding - I don't know that for sure - but it might be worth reading up about and then asking your OBGYN about - if you both think it is a good option, I think there is a prescribtion progesterone called Prometrium that might possibly be an option - if you go the RX route you will still being working with your doctor instead of going at it alone.

thanks for all ur replies. but i am still confused. all i want now is to regulate my periods, with or without ovulation. i wouldn't be trying for kids at least until 2-3 years. i understand ur suggestion to start taking the pill for 2-3 months and then start other natural remedies. but at the same time i don't want the side effects like gaining weight etc. until my wedding. i guess i'll decide something today i.e., yaz or vitex and stick to it.

I agree i think the BCPs since you have been bleeding for 2 years! I am a Vitex lover hehee but herbs work slow and 2 years of bleeding...well i think you need a quick solution.
Did your Doc mention a D&C? This same thing happens to my sister everyone once and awhile and they normally suggest that for her and it helps...ofcourse you may not want to do something like this before trying some pills but throwing it out there.

why dont you ask for a different kind of BCP? i hated yaz, it was horrible! However, ortho tri-cyclen was great! It will definatley regulate you in a couple months.

I agree that ortho tri-cyclen worked well for me. And I'll probably be right back on it once I have a little one. I actually lost weight on the pill but obviously it is different for everyone. I'd probably take your DR's advice on this one, at least to stop a 2 year bleed.

This is going to sound like something out of left field, but you may consider trying Choline-Inositol and possibly vitex. I started it myself about two weeks ago, after spending over 4 months dealing with spotting that varied from light to heavy enough to require a tampon or pad. Currently, I'm on day 2 of no spotting, as well as my weight has started to slowly go down.

Granted, the spotting may still come back, but I'm feeling confident enough in the *good* results I've seen to suggest it. Personally, I'm really dreading the idea of having to go on BCP's, because (like you) I don't want to deal with the side effects.

Actually, prior to the spotting, I'd been having extremely irregular cycles for about a year and a half. From 17 until 24 I had extremely regular cycles that came every 30 days or so.

Generally, I've been able to find it in most health food and vitamin stores, both on and offline. I'm not sure if it'll make a difference in the effectiveness, but it does look like you can order Inositol on it's own as well as paired with the Choline in one pill.

I use the combination pill that has both the Choline and Inositol, taking 3 doses of 500mg (the pills have 250mg of Inositol each) per day. This is the brand I use - click on the first link

I heard about it through this board, except it was women taking D-Chiro Inositol, which has been shown to have an effect on women with PCOS. However, the price tag on the D-Chiro was too high, so I sought out local, cheaper alternatives.

Prior to trying the Choline-Inositol, I'd also tried both Vitex and NPC with no results, so thus far I'm pretty happy with the results. I will warn that about 2 or 3 days after starting the pills, my spotting got really heavy - to the point that if it stays away, I'll consider it an actual AF - and then has been slowly tapering off until it disappeared completely on Christmas Eve. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it stays away for a few days - or maybe even 28-30 days :p

I think I posted this on another one of your question. I too bleed like you; try cinnamon and saw palmetto; it stopped my bleeding. If that dont work try progesterone cream. You really have to find what works for you as many here are helped by different things. It just proves that we are all different. I have been on a year of trial and error products, thats the only way you will stop the bleeding.( unless you go to a doc for pills.) Start with the cheapest and work your way up.
