I had blood work done for the whole checking of insulin resistance and they checked my thyroid levels too. 1st Doctor says all is well and second put me on Glucophage anyway! Then I looked up online and it is high...I am confused...please someone can you tell me how my Glucose and Thyroid levels are...thanks...Bel
First of all, your fasting glucose is wonderful; however, you need a fasting insulin test to determine if you have insulin resistance. IR can be going on even when blood sugar levels are normal. A fasting glucose test does not tell the whole story, though; a glucose tolerance test (and testing insulin at the same time) would be able to give more info about how your body responds to glucose spikes. Many docs will now prescribe Metformin to women with PCOS even when they don't test positive for insulin resistance, though.
You didn't list your lab ranges for the thyroid tests, and lab ranges do differ, but I'll take a stab at this using typical lab ranges:
TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone)
new lab range (this may be different than the one your lab reported; the suggested lab range was revised in 2003):
0.3 to 3.04
Yours: TSH - 2.5 uiu/ml
Yours is in range, although most women feel best when it is closer to 1.0. TSH levels can vary as much as 3 points, and don't tell as much as the other thyroid tests.
Thyroxine (T4) . This shows the total amount of the T4. High levels may be due to hyperthyroidism, however technical artifact occurs when estrogen levels are higher from pregnancy, birth control pills or estrogen replacement therapy. A Free T4 can avoid this interference.
Yours is on the high side, BUT if you are taking birth control pills, the estrogen can skew the results. This is why the doc also ran the T7 test (see below).
T3-UPTAKE - Increased levels are found in hyperthyroidism, severe liver disease, metastatic malignancy, and pulmonary insufficiency. Decreased levels are found in hypothyroidism, normal pregnancy, and hyperestrogenis status.
Normal Adult Range: 27 - 47%
Optimal Adult Reading: 37 %
Yours: T3 Uptake - 20% (yours is low)
(Note: This is an antiquated test that isn't used much anymore since T4 can be directly measured).
Free Thyroxine Index (FTI or T7) : A mathematical computation allows the lab to estimate the free thyroxine index from the T4 and T3 Uptake tests. The results tell us how much thyroid hormone is free in the blood stream to work on the body. Unlike the T4 alone, it is not affected by estrogen levels
Typical range: 1.0-4.5 range
Yours: T7 (FTI) - 2.44 (normal)
If you are having symptoms of thyroid problems, you should ask your doc to run a Free T3, and a thyroid antibodies test (TPO). Otherwise, it doesn't look like you have anything to worry about. And in answer to your question, no you don't have hyperthyroidism. What did your doc say about the results?

I hope you are well...and I hope God multiplies your blessings tenfold...anything you need please do not hesitate to ask...except a baby...lol...can't have any...lol...Bel

hi guys. Can't see the doctor till monday but I had blood work done and I don't know what it means. I have all the symptoms for Hyper but here are the results, can anybody tell me how bad it is, if at all?
T3 48.0% (normal range 23.0 to 36.0%) T4 23.4 mcg/dl (normal range 4.5 to 12.0 mcg/dl T7 11.2 (normal range 1.0 to 4.3)
TSH 0.010mUI/mL
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN. I feel horrible by the way; exhausted and trembling and anxious all the time.
Yes, you look hyper to me. Your doc will probably run an antibodies test to check for Graves (an autoimmune thyroid disorder), and probably check your thyroid gland for a goiter. Don't worry...once you begin treatment you will feel much better! Good luck at the doc's
