i'm 24 and convinced i have PCOS. Ever since I came off the contraceptive pill (a year ago) i have had increased facial and body hair (although it's blonde at the moment). i have also had extremely irregular periods and recently i have noticed my hair thinning along the scalp. i am also overweight and despite exercising and eating fairly healthily i cannot shift it.
i have been to see 4 different doctors to express my worries and they won't listen to me. they did a hormone test (i had to make them) which suggested my oestrogen was very low, but they refused to act on it.
does anyone know anywhere else i can go other than a GP? i am so unhappy and stressed and don't want to end up going bald and being infertile in my 20s. or does anyone know anything i can do without taking prescription medications?
Check the boards for a recommendation of good doctors in your area. If there are none, put out a thread asking for cysters in your area who have had luck w/ their doctors.
As lovely said, don't give up. I've been through numerous doctors. I've had dr's flat out tell me they are not interested in helping me. But you can & will find one who will listen.
There are also lots of success stories on this board - women who have found medications to help them and women who have had babies!!! It is possible and you are on the right track!
Good luck!

Your Beauty should not come from outward adornment.....instead, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit (1 Peter 3:3-4)
You know I have to say this the ones who aren't listening or the ones who say they aren't interested in helping you take that as a good thing, Means they wont waste your time and are telling you not to waste your time with them.
You'll find one!

I had 3 medical doctors over several years tell me I was not hypothyroid and that my hormones were fine, then they followed that up with insults. OC doctors only work 20 hour weeks, they want to get to the beach asap. Then when I heard of PCOS from a client I went to her doctor who is an endo, the best one in Irvine, CA. I paid 400 to see her and 150 follow ups but I got treated and I was hypothyroid and estrogen dominant.
She told me MD's read the results conservatively and endos read it right. Gyno's don't read them the same way endo's do and have different meds at times I hear.
If you have thinning hair, it could be hypothyroid. My hair was coming out on my brush and my bf at the time was grossed out by all the hair. My hair THICK and curly and really long so loosing hair in the brush was a major sign because I already had so much hair to start. Now that I've been in thyroid medicine for almost 18 months my hair is growning back. I have not been treated for PCOS consistantly because metformin is hard on me so I end up going off it, so my hair grown is because of armor thyroid. Alwasy try and get natural hormones. My mother who is menopausal gets synthetics and she is one insane woman. I think the synthetics have totally given her mental illness. She likes her mental mania though and tried natural but was mellow (go figure) and went back on synthetic so she could be manic. She like those highs.
Anyway, low estrogen tells me it is something other than PCOS. Most women have higher than normal estrogen in general because of our environment having so many estrogens that we absorb daily, but PCOS women usually have extremely high estrogen, but I could be wrong. It could be your in early menopause or have something else going on. But the hair thinning, armor thyroid helped mine a great deal.
I went through 2 doctors telling me there was NOTHING wrong with me and that I was just fat and that was the sole cause. My 3rd doctor was wonderful. I talked to some people at work and they suggested her and if I could remember who it was I would thank them a million times because I am finally on the right track. I too had increased facial hair and weight gain and my periods just disappeared after I went off the pill, I had to go off because of high BP. Ask around for a helpful doctor, that is what I did. I wish you the best of luck because I know how it feels and what you are going through.
