Default Please help me...

I was told by my m.d. last year that my blood work indicated that i have PCOS... i have the following symptoms:
gaining weight like crazy, she said my insulin levels where high, hair growing where it shouldn't (OMG), acne, family history of diabetes and i had diabetes during my pregnancy.
i have an iud in because i was told i have a fibroid tumor and was told it would help my period which was so heavy and unpredictable but this was done before i found out i have PCOS. Most ppl don't have periods at all with an iud and mine have become heavy again and never on time, sometimes it is a week early or 2 weeks late...UGH.
I have two kids and had my tubes tied, so getting pregnant is not an issue, but i would like anyone input on what they think about this. I have an appointment on the 4th with the doctor. Thanks for listening...

Hi sweetie,

I can empathise with weight gain! UGH! Isn't it just horrid and unfair? Especially if you have a great friend that weighs practically nothing, can eat more than you do and gain...air. Talk to your doctor about some medications that will level out the process of your insulin first. This may be the ticket to your weight loss. Infact your insulin is the main problem- I know, total suckage right? Tell them what you want, what you want to see...they should be able to help you out! I'm looking for answers myself.

Good luck!

before deciding on a PCOS diagnosis did your doctors also EXCLUDE the possibility of things like Cushing's Disease? (the symptoms are very similar)

Also, where in GA are you? There are some great PCOS doctors in the Atlanta area, as well as, some good laser docs who can banish the hair.

My doctor also said there is a cream you can get that gets rid of the hair? I'm not sure what its called- I dont have that problem yet..just a few black hairs here and there.

Vaniqua is the cream. It will simply slow down the growth. But if it's only a few hairs, you might want to just pluck, or have them spot lasered. For only a few hairs, laser might cost the same as Vaniqua.

I do pluck. I don't need the cream. I don't think the few hairs are that big of a deal. Now my sister on the other hand...sadly could grow a full beard if she wanted to. Its ridiculous but she refuses to see a doctor. She's already had a cyst rupture on her ovary.

I guess it really depends on how much hair you have growing, where and if you're willing to pluck, shave, or nair it till...you get too tired of doing it!

Thank ya'll so much for the advice. I am in the southeastern part of GA, between Macon and Savannah. I will look into the cushings thing. The hair problem is pretty bad, i have to shave my neck/chin area every morning and also have it on my stomach and chest area...it makes me feel so un-womaly.

Did you doctor put you on any anti-androgens, or offer any other treatment for the hair?

the m.d. offered metformin, i took it for a short while but it upset my stomach so much i stopped taking it. I just looked into the cushings syndrome and the dark purple stretch marks they talking about called striae i have on my stomach and behind my knees! is that something my gyno can see me about or would a m.d have to?

Part of the PCOS diagnosis is first EXCLUDING other things that could be the cause of your symptoms.

You might want to call your doctor and specifically ask him/her how s/he arrived at your pcos diagnosis, and go from there.

well, i have a copy of my records from the blood work, but my m.d. left the dr. office a few months back. I have an appointment with my gyno in a couple of weeks so i will discuss everything with her. I have gather information from this site and a few others to take with me, including a ton of questions. Thanks for all the information and advise.

I can sympathize with you! I have acne problems (they seem to come and go, but I never have perfect skin like my friends), hair in places that it shouldn't be, and I also had gestational diabetes. I hope your appointment goes well on the 4th and that your dr listens to all your concerns!

Thank you so much. It worries me that ppl with PCOS have a greater risk for diabetes, and with me having it during pregnancy and also my dad having it...scary

I can completely understand how you feel. I have dark hair on my chin and neck. I have to pluck in my spair time. The weight game has been the hardest thing in the world for me. I can't fit into any of my clothes and I have been depressed. Just recently started on anti-depressants. I told the doc, I am on 9 pills a day now. I am not noticing any change. Goin to start low carbs again and walking. Good luck with your visit.
