My cousin has found someone that wants her to adopt her baby(she's very young and already has 3 and doesn't want this one)--it's actually someone she knows through a friend so it will be a closed adoption, i think. This is her only chance to have a baby.
Anyway my question is, she's going to be doing the homestudy soon and is very worried about this because she suffers among things like pcos, infertility, but also rheumatoid arthritis and some other things. It's not bad enough that she couldn't take care of a baby, but she's worried how they look at it. Are they very picky about your medical background? any comments would be appreciated. TIA
Deanna

Physicals are required on the part of both parents, but I think they are just looking to ensure that the applicants are physcially able to care for the child. I don't know how much of that info is shared with the bio parent/s.
I hope it works out for her!

Baby boy on the way!!!!!!! Due 3/10/2010 I couldn't feel more blessed.
Why is she having to do a homestudy if it's a personl decision on both ends for the adoption? An attorney would just do the paperwork. I'm just curious because I know two people who did the same thing, and it was all done by the attorney because the mother chose the couple to adopt and agreed to it immediately after the birth.

This is basically how our adoption came about.
Why will it be a closed adoption if they know the person? Did you mean a private adoption? Closed means that they won't send letters or photos and sometimes don't know the other side of the adoption triad.
As for her health. During the homestudy they will have to have a Physical done. They doctor might have to write a note on letter head stating that you are able to care for a child.

In most states all adoptions have to have homestudies done, other then step-adoptions, since one parent is still parenting.

Thanks for the replies:
Aimes16- I'm pretty sure the lawyer said she had to do a homestudy.
Miss-Meme-she does want a closed adoption, for her own personal reasons, and she doesn't know this girl personally, it's like a friend of a friend. She doesn't want to exchange pics or letters and so far the birth mother wants it that way as well.
She's mostly just worried that whomever does the physical will say she isn't capible of handling a baby. She's so very excited about this and would be devistated if in the end she's denied because of her medical history. The baby is due in the beginning of July so I guess she'll know before too long.

Can I ask if there is a reason she's doesn't want contact? Just asking, because an open adoption is so healthy for everyone involved.
Does she have a family doctor who knows her history? That's who she would want to do it.

The homestudy does ask that both parents have a physical but its just to insure that the new parents are healthy enough to raise a child her infertility and arthritis wont affect her at all. Hope everything works out great.
