I am one of those who has not got a very understanding GP. After a long time I was allowed to take blood tests, I was told that they came back normal. Now I due to all my symtoms I doubt this. I dont even know if I have had all the appropriate tests done. My questions is does any of you know anything about this, ie if I showed any of you my results (I made gp print them out) would you be able to shed any light on my results and if I have had the right tests done? Eva for instance (if you do read this) you seem to know so much, can you help or do you know anyone that can?
I don't know anything really about the tests etc., but I wondered, is your doctor doing anything else to help? Or is it a case of the tests came back negative, so that's that? Or is he looking into it further to see what else the symptoms could be?
In your situation I would ditch your doctor and find a one that actucally wants to help you. Maybe you will get a diagnosis and help quicker.
Hope someone else can help.

Were you taking any medication whilst the tests were being carried out? e.g. the pill? As that would change your hormones so it would be pointless testing them whilst you were on the pill.
I would ask you doctor what tests they did, and for a breakdown of the results. I cant remember exactly but its something like LH, FSH and testosterone that they need to test. When I was tested, my doctor was quite happy to give me a breakdown of the numbers.
The numbers needed to be in a certain range to be "normal" and mine were abnormal which indicated PCOS.
Found this on another website
"what usually happens is that they compare the LH level against that of your FSH (follicle stimulation hormone). Normally LH and FSH are the same; however, in PCOS the level of LH far exceeds that of FSH"
Hope that helps. Give your dr a ring and find out exactly what tests were done.

aww, i know what you mean! Test results can come back normal, and there is still something going on! Could you see a different gp about your results? And asked to be referred to an endo? (hormone dr). Hope you get some answers, soon.
eva
Get your results and post them here and I'll see if I can interpret them for you. I'm no expert but have been trying to get the better of PCOS for a long time so might be able to shed some light. Owlie is right though, if you are taking any hormone based medication the results will be false. LH/FSH is the big one to look at.

Well, the best person to assess your care so far would be another doctor naturally. Can you get a second opinion at your surgery?
However, if you post them up, I'm happy to give you my lay opinion.
I empathise with how you feel. Given my levels of hirsutism I was STAGGERED when my testosterone result came back as normal!
Ah Thank you so much for replying, it touched me! Thank you all!
Paddy I will post them and if any of you can shed some light then that would be great. I am on dianette so perhaps thats why docs are not very concerned? They didnt even tell me that would affect the test results...
I know I have a problem, then scans have confirmed it and I have the symptoms ie hair, acne, weight, no periods etc etc
Oh and Eva, well done for getting to your target weight!!
I dont see how they can test you for PCOS if you are on dianette. The test would involve seeing what your hormone levels are, and if you are on dianette then your hormone levels will be changed by the dianette.
I would go back to your dr and ask a) what the results were and b) how accurate they would be considering you were on dianette.
Personally, I would come off dianette for a couple of months then get them to repeat the test.

Docs just called and it seemed like they have had further tests back that were not normal so I will need to go back and see what they are, will give me an opportunity to talk to the GP as well... I will ask how dianette will effect it all.
Does anyone know of a good endo in the London area?
