I'm a big fan of "depends on the doctor." My OB/GYN is ten times more useful and educated than any RE I've had, but I'm sure most ladies here would advocate an RE or plain Endo.
Shop around for doctors everywhere. Make sure you can get someone who knows about PCOS and doesn't just have a fancy title. I missed out on my doctor for years (and he's right in my hometown) because I thought I needed a "special" doctor.

A good one will. My doctor is apparently smart enough to educate himself on the sorts of things that make women infertile - after all, wouldn't it make sense to? I'm sure he sees plenty of women that have fertility problems!

Definately its better to see an Endo than a Gyn for PCOS.
PCOS is a hormonal /Metabolic disorder.
GYno's deal in the physical mostly....most of the testing etc is via blood tests of hormones etc so Endos are more skilled with metabolic hormonal disorders.
You would see a gyno more for something physical say Endometriosis or a physical problem with your uterus or cervic...
My doc listens to my concerns, sends me for tests when necessary and does not push any treatment I'm not comfortable with. He never lectures me about my weight, but encourages me to continue to eat healthy. He seems very knowledgable about PCOS, IR and women's concerns. Sadly many docs are not.
It is definitely best to see an Endo over an OB/GYN.
Like the above poster stated Endo's deal with hormonal and metabolical disorders whereas OB/GYN deal more with general woman issues.
The above posters who have great luck with their OB's are very lucky. I too have a great OB that I love to pieces and really feel that I get great care, but I also have an Endo that I couldn't live with out.
My endo specializes in fertility issues and a lot of Endo's are specializing in specific areas. You could get a list of Endo's and specifically ask what their specialty area is. Most doc's will be frank and upfront about their history in dealing with PCOS.
I agree with the women who say that it depends on the individual doctor. My ob/gyn has been great regarding my PCOS and infertility and now pregnancy. I'm sure there are limits to his knowledge on it all, but for what I've needed, he's met and exceeded all my expectations. I've heard of women on here who've had horrible endos and REs...but also great ones. You just have to try one on and see if it's right...

I was very fortunate to have a ob/gyn that knew about PCOS, i didn't even know it existed until she mentioned it. But the best part is that she was very honest with me and basically told me that she knew it existed but didn't have enough knowledge or experience with it to offer the best treatment, so she referred me to a RE. That was the best thing for me, my RE is wonderful. She has had a lot of experience with PCOS and is very knowledgeable.
I think you have to find a dr who knows about it and how to treat it. At the same time, listens to you.

I think it does depend on the doctor, but personally I think you should go to both. My gyno DXed me, and told me to find an endo. They both know I have PCOS and both help me with it to a point, but in different ways. My gyno is intent on getting me to have a period etc., while my endo sees the bigger picture. I need both of them.

I agree that it depends on the doctor, however, I personally prefer a reproductive endocronologist. Regular endo's never seemed to fully understand my needs, but my RE is fabulous. He is thorough and attentive, and actually knows a lot about PCOS.
Good luck in your search!
